The Glass Bead Game (German: Das Glasperlenspiel) is the last work and magnum opus of the German author Hermann Hesse. Begun in 1931 and published in Switzerland in 1943, the book was mentioned in Hesse's citation for the 1946 Nobel Prize for Literature.

P.S. Feel free to leave a message on my talk page if you need help with anything or simply wish to say hello. :)
"Glass Bead Game" is a literal translation of the German title. The title has also been translated as Magister Ludi. "Magister Ludi," Latin for "master of the game," is the name of an honorific title awarded to the book's central character. Magister Ludi can also be seen as a pun: lud is a Latin stem meaning both "game" and "school."

Thanks for cleaning that up and adding the link on the Episodes part. I...umm...well...I have a friend that works at a CBS affiliate and I wanted to get that out. He said it was also on cbs.com but buried somewhere. I tried to find it there but could not. Looks better though, thanks. WarFighter 22:05, 8 November 2006 (UTC)

The Glass Bead Game takes place during the 23rd century. The setting is a fictional province of central Europe called Castalia, reserved by political decision for the life of the mind; technology and economic life are kept to a strict minimum. Hesse mentions the political violence of the 20th century in passing, but his main critique of that century is encapsulated by his dismissive name for it: the Age of the Feuilleton, an intellectually superficial and decadent period, when middle brow journalism replaced serious reading and reflection.

The Price Is Right
Castalia is home to a monastic order of intellectuals with a twofold mission: to run boarding schools for boys (the novel is thus a detailed exploration of education and the life of the mind), and to nurture and play the Glass Bead Game (see below).

The novel chronicles the life of a distinguished member of the order, Joseph Knecht (the surname translates as "servant" or "farm hand"), as narrated by a fictional historian of the order. Hence the novel is an example of a Bildungsroman. At any given time, the member of the order deemed the best Game player is honored with the title Magister Ludi.

What you reverted doesn't appear to be vandalism at all. Any reason not to re-revert it? matt kane's brain 15:03, 14 June 2006 (UTC)
Polarities lie at the heart of the work, as is commonly the case in Hesse's novels. Two relationships are of particular interest, that of Knecht with his teacher, the learned monk Father Jacobus, and with his best friend at the boarding school run by the order, Plinio Designori, the scion of a rich family. At the end of their school days, Knecht, representing aestheticism and the Life of the Mind, joins the order, while Designori returns to the world. He embodies a failed reconciliation between mind and world.

Nickelodeon
In his introduction to Demian, Thomas Mann likened his relation with Hesse to that of Knecht and Jacobus, adding that their knowledge of each other was not possible without much ceremony. Mann extrapolates on Hesse's observance of Oriental customs in the novel. The Glass Bead Game manifests Hesse's enduring dream of combining East with West. For example, the discipline of the imaginary monastic community includes breathing and meditation techniques of clear Oriental inspiration.

Hey, your rvv from today is identical to the previous version, complete with a broken link and mangled sentences. I'll revert to the one before the IP edits, 'kay? Karen 21:53, 12 July 2006 (UTC)
Castalia is an Ivory Tower, an ethereal protected community within a larger nation, devoted to pure intellectual pursuits, and oblivious to the problems posed by life outside its boundaries. Knecht gradually comes to doubt whether the intellectually gifted have a right to withdraw from life's big problems. He eventually concludes that they do not, and that conclusion precipitates a sort of midlife crisis. Accordingly, he does the unthinkable: he resigns as Magister Ludi and asks to leave the order, ostensibly to become of value and service, in some way, to the larger culture. A few days later, he drowns in a mountain lake, while attempting a swim for which he was not fit. Tragically, living in Castalia made Knecht unfit for life in the world. Hesse also makes an existentialist point: faced with a dilemma, Knecht opts for the world and not the ivory tower.

KUSA-TV, et.al., from User:Jamesinc3
Many characters in the novel have names that are allusive word games. For example, Knecht's predecessor as Magister Ludi was Thomas van der Trave, a veiled reference to Thomas Mann who was born in Lübeck, situated on the Trave River. Father Jacobus is based on the novelist Jakob Wassermann. The character of Carlo Ferromonte is a punning reference to Hesse's nephew Karl Isenberg.

Central characters
*Joseph Knecht: The central character of the book. The Magister Ludi for most of the book.
*The Music Master: Knecht's spiritual mentor who when Knecht is a child examines him for entrance into the elite schools of Castalia.
* Plinio Designori: Knecht's antithesis in the world outside.
*Father Jacobus: Knecht's antithesis in faith.
*Elder Brother: A former Castalian and student of Chinese.
*Thomas van der Trave: Joseph Knecht's predecessor as Magister Ludi.
*Fritz Tegularius: A friend of Knecht's but a portent of what Castalians might become if they remain insular.

Hesse's Glass Bead Game
At the center of the monastic order lies the (fictitious) glass bead game, whose exact nature remains elusive. The precise rules of the game are only alluded to, and are so sophisticated that they are not easy to imagine. Suffice it to say that playing the Game well requires years of hard study of music, mathematics, and cultural history. Essentially the game is an abstract synthesis of all arts and scholarship. It proceeds by players making deep connections between seemingly unrelated topics. For example, a Bach concerto may be related to a mathematical formula. One description says:

MTV Tr3s
“Theoretically,” writes the Narrator Archivist, “this instrument is capable of producing in the Game the entire intellectual content of the universe. The manuals, pedal, and stops are now fixed. Changes in their number and order and attempts at perfecting them, are actually no longer feasible except in theory.” And with this statement, he reveals the limitations of the game: its elitism, its hubris, its stagnation, and its sterility. In its infancy, the Game was played with delicate glass beads, which have since been discarded as too . . . real? They connected the Game with the spiritual beads played by religious believers worldwide, as the robes, and secret language, and ceremonial trappings of the game form a mock religious experience in the time of the Narrator Archivist. Without them, the game flies into the ether without a tether to reality. In our world, prayer beads and the repetition of simple phrases serve as keys to transcendence. In Castalia, they are discarded and the key is lost. The Narrator Archivist makes no reference to the ecstatic states that might be achieved by Glass Bead Game players. The games as he describes them in Knecht’s time (the twenty-second century) and his own (the twenty-fourth century) apparently fall short of what seems the obvious goal.

Scoey Mitchlll = Scoey Mitchell = Scoey Mitchill ?
The Game derives its name from the fact that it was originally played with tokens, perhaps analogous to those of an abacus or the game Go. At the time that the novel takes place, such props had become obsolete and the game is played only with abstract, spoken formulas. The audience's appreciation of a good game draws on its appreciation of both music and mathematical elegance.

First, sorry about the typo in the edit summary claiming I was changing "ill" to "ell"—though, by then, I probably was ;-). I was actually checking "Kennedy" the other red-linked name and decided to f/u on Scoey as well.
The Glass Bead Game also brings to mind Leibniz's notion of a universal calculus and his dream of a Mathesis universalis. Douglas Hofstadter's Gödel, Escher, Bach, even though it does not mention Hesse's novel, is an intellectual exercise very much in the spirit of the Game.

I assume that this became his "stage" name? When I G'd him I checked both the "ill" and "ell" forms with "-wikipedia" (then adding "Match Game"; replacing "MG" with "comedian"; replaced "comedian" with "show") and wound up deciding that "ell' would be the entry people would use. Having checked your correction just now I see the following distribution:
However rather as being seen as a purely intellectual or rational notion it is more likely the glass bead game includes more Existential elements. As Hesse's other works (such as Steppenwolf for example) draw strongly on Existential themes it is likely that the glass bead game refers to the way in which people construct their realities. That is to say that the glass bead game is in fact life or existence and it illustrates the ways that people position not just themselves material but how they construct their entire perception of reality. As one needs to understand reality before one can deliberately allocate it this is the reference to the years of study.

The IMDB site has a pretty full list of his career activities and uses "ell"; the NY Times "lll" (but few entries).... Depending on whether he really used the "lll" form (& registered with the actors guild?) I would probably put him at Mitchlll with a re-direct from Mitchell (& Mitchell, since the "comedian" hits are so high)

'Salright about the revert thing yesterday. We all do stuff on here that we later realize we shouldn't have once in a while. 71.31.67.115 02:25, 3 February 2006 (UTC) (Steve Gavazzi)

What you reverted doesn't appear to be vandalism at all. Any reason not to re-revert it? matt kane's brain 15:03, 14 June 2006 (UTC)

Hey, your rvv from today is identical to the previous version, complete with a broken link and mangled sentences. I'll revert to the one before the IP edits, 'kay? Karen 21:53, 12 July 2006 (UTC)

A comment regarding BLAKLEYSHOT

Nice work you've done there watching after him. As a bit of a precautionary measure, I created User:Jamesinc7, so don't be suprised if he skips a number, or even comes up with a new name. —Whomp t/c 03:33, 12 September 2006 (UTC)

stop reverting my edits,if u actually watched the channel ud see that its true, and if the network finds that they will realize that's a mistake and stop airing those programs.

You have been warned several times in the past about NPOV.

Scoey Mitchlll = Scoey Mitchell = Scoey Mitchill ?

First, sorry about the typo in the edit summary claiming I was changing "ill" to "ell"—though, by then, I probably was ;-). I was actually checking "Kennedy" the other red-linked name and decided to f/u on Scoey as well.

328 — "scoey mitchlll" -wikipedia / "match game" = 86 / "comedian" = 23 /
1450 — "scoey mitchell" -wikipedia / "match game" = 217 / "comedian" = 269
232 — "scoey mitchill" -wikipedia / "match game" = 12 / "comedian" = 131

The IMDB site [1] has a pretty full list of his career activities and uses "ell"; the NY Times "lll" (but few entries).... Depending on whether he really used the "lll" form (& registered with the actors guild?) I would probably put him at Mitchlll with a re-direct from Mitchell (& Mitchell, since the "comedian" hits are so high)

In any case, it would really be nice if even a stub were written (there is one at the French WP!) to which the name(s) could be blue-linked (hint, hint) --RCEberwein | Talk 15:01, 11 November 2006 (UTC)

Orphaned fair use image (Image:NBC Logo.svg)

Mmbabies

For reference: community ban discussion is archived here.

Thanks "Gridlock" for helping control Mmbabies, who so far has posted crap under 19 different IPs. And I though BenH was a problem.

Thanks again. -- azumanga 03:24, 10 March 2007 (UTC)

No problem. If user continues, it may be worth our while to request Semi-protection for each of the stations affected. -- Gridlock Joe 19:37, 12 March 2007 (UTC)
Thanks, Gridlock. Check out my little piece on him here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:68.90.227.49#And_another_thing... -- azumanga 02:31, 15 March 2007 (UTC)
Since the previous semi-protect failed, do you want to try again? This time, have them take a real, close look at the Mmbabies sockpuppet category (with special attention to the WHOIS logs). (Sorry I can;t give a direct link for a category.) -- azumanga 02:40, 22 March 2007 (UTC)
Considering he's extending his vandalism into other areas (my favourite: "On February 19, 2009, which is the end of the digital TV conversion period for full-service stations, Cinnamon Toast Crunch will be required to turn off its analog signal and turn on its digital signal (called a "flash-cut")."), it may be time to consider requesting a block for the whole of the IP range. -- Gridlock Joe 03:09, 22 March 2007 (UTC)
Have you thought about proposing a "community ban" against Mmbabies and his IPs? See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Ban#Community_ban -- azumanga 22:16, 25 March 2007 (UTC)

After looking at his socks' threats and edit summaries, I went ahead and proposed it ... this clown is a direct threat to the project. GOod Lord, I didn't know it was possible to do this much damage in only 2 months ... --Blueboy96 04:45, 27 March 2007 (UTC)

Here's the link ... we need to get rid of this idiot, now. --Blueboy96 04:50, 27 March 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the community ban proposal. I've been away the past few days and unable to keep track of him. -- Gridlock Joe 03:31, 29 March 2007 (UTC)

It's possible that Mmbabies (talk · contribs) could belong to BenH (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · nuke contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log). BuickCenturyDriver (Honk, contribs, odometer) 04:50, 29 March 2007 (UTC)
I don't believe so -- BenH's edits came from Winter Park, FL, using Embarq's servers; Mmbabies' posts come from Houston, mostly from SBC's servers. -- azumanga 13:46, 29 March 2007 (UTC)
One more thing about the above -- BenH's edits generally involve unnecessary edits and additions, plus some false material, but he never threatened. Mmbabies' edits is malicious vandalism and falsehoods. If you compare the two, you will find that, while both deserve bans, they are from two different "worlds". -- azumanga 18:03, 29 March 2007 (UTC)

Do you think we should request protection for the Houston TV articles again, now that we have something to go on? The community ban so far has done nothing -- maybe we should try "cutting the fuel from the fire" again. -- azumanga 20:56, 8 April 2007 (UTC)

I'm thinking that WP:ABUSE may be the way to go here. -- Gridlock Joe 12:37, 9 April 2007 (UTC)
I agree. Let's do it. -- azumanga 16:05, 9 April 2007 (UTC)
Abuse report filed. -- Gridlock Joe 00:03, 10 April 2007 (UTC)
Should've also included this: 68.91.100.208. See KRIV's talk page and you'll know what I mean. That's definitely grounds for getting his internet pulled for sure. -- azumanga 01:35, 10 April 2007 (UTC)
And... 68.91.110.255. I take it that he's not serious about ANYTHING, even from the religious shows he claims to watch. -- azumanga 00:55, 19 April 2007 (UTC)

All righty, folks. His most recent edits, and the death threats on the edit summaries, have prompted me to open a case on WP:ANI. -- Gridlock Joe 12:32, 19 April 2007 (UTC)

Incidentally, per WP:BAN, "Any edits made in defiance of a ban may be reverted to enforce the ban, regardless of the merits of the edits themselves. As the banned user is not authorized to make those edits, there is no need to discuss them prior to reversion." -- Gridlock Joe 01:40, 3 May 2007 (UTC)

Is there anything that we can do to stop him for good? So far, he sockpuppetted 55 IPs, and that number's bound to rise even more. And, considering his defiant demeanor and unsavory language, I bet oranges to apples that he watches Gospel Bill only for the background noise, and not the lessons. -- azumanga 02:50, 3 May 2007 (UTC)
One thing I like to add is that on KETH-TV's article, in one revision, he called me a "(freakin') lady". Being a man, I think he's bordering on libel here as well. -- azumanga 14:11, 3 May 2007 (UTC)

Because channel 14 is The WB/CW. KNUZ is channel 14's call letters. Same thing with 2, 11, 13, 20, 26, 33, 47, 51 and 55. There all owned by The WB. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 71.147.18.111 (talkcontribs) 4 May 2007 (UTC)

In other words, every single television station in Houston is not only owned by people who don't know their real station identities, but owned by a network that no longer exists (and did not own any stations to begin with). You're mental, you know that? -- azumanga 02:10, 4 May 2007 (UTC)

KETH-TV 39

For god sakes KETH is 39 and KHTV is 14. Everytime you think of 14, think of the The WB/CW Network, 39 think of TBN and NBC. Go to channel 14 at 7714 Westpark Drive, at Hillcroft Avuenue, at Houston, Texas. Tell them that channel 14 is the CW.

Really -- You don't think KETH knows their own affiliation? Are you that dense? -- azumanga 02:32, 15 March 2007 (UTC)

Oh, yah, really? I had already made WB 26 in Houston, Texas. Everytime I put WB 26 it changes, and I told them not to change this stupid WB 26.—The preceding comment is by 68.89.173.69 (talkcontribs) 20:38, April 4, 2007: Please sign your posts!

You have been banned. REPEATING -- You have been banned. We will be reporting this to your ISP for a TOS violation. We will see to it that you'll never use the internet again.
