Revision as of 14:23, 30 June 2007

This page is for requests to usurp accounts that already exist in the circumstances described below. If you wish to request a rename to a username that is not already taken, please do so at Wikipedia:Changing username.

This page permits users to request, and bureaucrats to consider and carry out, the "usurpation" of usernames. This consists of renaming an existing dormant account in order to permit another user to adopt the name. If you are interested in usurping another username, please be advised that the account must have no edits or log entries (except in the username creation log) to qualify for usurpation. A request may also be rejected if it is determined that the requested account has made edits that were subsequently deleted.

Please do not request usurpation if your user account is less than several months old, or barely used. In order to ensure that usurped usernames be put to good use, we prefer only to grant requests from reasonably well-established users.

Process

Please follow these instructions carefully to ensure that the process runs efficiently. Malformed requests may be rejected.

  • Be sure the account you wish to usurp has no edits or log entries, as described above.
  • Leave a message on the talk page of the target account (preferably of the form {{subst:usurpation requested}} ~~~~) notifying the user of your request.
  • Please do not e-mail the target account yourself. If this becomes necessary, a bureaucrat or other designated user will do it.
  • Copy and paste the following text into the bottom of the section on this page for today's date.
{{subst:usurp|Name_To_Usurp|Current_Name}} ~~~~
Replace "Name_To_Usurp" with the username you wish to usurp, and "Current_Name" with your current username. You may include some reason for the change if you wish. Be sure you are logged in under your current username. Save the page.
  • If the owner of the target account does not object within seven days, a bureaucrat will fulfill your request. Mark the date, so you will not be surprised when you find yourself unable to log in to your old account.

A few users have agreed to provide assistance with the mechanics of this process. If you wish to assist as well, please read the linked page carefully.

Instructions to bureaucrats

  • Accounts should be renamed to "Username (usurped)" -- this is intuitive and is unlikely ever to be a desired account name. The links labeled '1' and '2' will automatically fill out the user renaming interface with the proper information.
  • If a user consents to have his account usurped, the request may be fulfilled immediately, rather than after the full waiting period.
  • Mark completed requests with {{done}} and rejected requests with {{not done}}. A bot will archive them.

But nothing happens unless we ask for consent, right? Otherwise, what's going on on the rest of these pages? ~EdBoy[c] 23:58, 7 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Interesting point...the user name does have an email set and the rules do state the target username can give consent... -N 06:21, 8 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Well I'm uncomfortable - but if they give consent then so be it. Secretlondon 14:58, 25 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I put the sign thing up five days ago, but after emailing them they never replied. I think you would still consider that as no consent, right? ~EdBoy[c] 17:54, 26 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Shade ← Shade (usurper), Nihiltres

If you want to usurp the Shade username, you will first have to create the account User:Shade (usurper). You must have an account already to usurp the username with. I'm not entirely sure a bureaucrat will usurp an account for a Doppelganger account, but you can always try. Wikihermit (TalkHermesBot) 22:57, 8 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Understood, I created the account and I'm not counting on anything. If a bureaucrat doesn't think it's reasonable, I don't have a problem with a refusal - I want this username mainly because it is another of my primary pseudonyms, and I don't think the user in question plans to edit. Nihiltres(t.c.s) 15:30, 9 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Doppelganger accounts are no longer used as the MediaWiki software that Wikipedia is using has been programmed to not accept new accounts that are too similar to another current username. Therefore, this request should be declined or withdrawn. E talk 22:32, 9 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
This isn't a doppelganger request, this is a request for a particular name for a legitimate sockpuppet. Nihiltres(t.c.s) 01:35, 10 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Note:
  • The target username meets the requirements for usurpation.
I'm unsure whether the bureaucrats will be willing to fulfil this request. On the one hand it meets the requirements, but on the other Shade is likely to be quite a popular name. Allocating it to someone who will make little use of it seems a waste. It might be helpful if you gave further details of what you plan to use this account for. WjBscribe 14:37, 10 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
As it looks like you won't use it for anything I'm not prepared to usurp it. Secretlondon 23:03, 15 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The problem for which I was going to apply this was resolved, and my primary alternate use doesn't apply yet. If that alternate use applies in the future, I'll reapply appropriately. Sorry for any trouble. Nihiltres(t.c.s) 13:08, 16 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Note:
  • The target username meets the requirements for usurpation.

Clerk note: Usurpation is generally reserved for established editors. The account requesting this usurpation was created just 4 days ago and has about 10 edits, just under half of which are related to the Changing Username process. --NickContact/Contribs 00:44, 10 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Kazutoko ← Japanese Kazutoko

Note:
  • The target username has made edits to Wikipedia. Due to licensing concerns, this may be a barrier to usurpation.
Clerk's note. Japanese Kazutoko (who is ja:User:Kazutoko) has explained on the opposite talk page [1] that he goes by User:Kazutoko on several other WikiMedia projects. He has made a statement on his talk page on the Japanese Wikipedia to verify this [2]. The target username, en:User:Kazutoko has made one edit [3] which claims he is ja:User:Kazutoko, but ja:User:Kazutoko states this is false. That edit was in January 2007. — Carl (CBM · talk) 15:31, 17 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I think that we can know User:Kazutoko isn't ja:User:Kazutoko if we do CheckUser about User:Japanese Kazutoko and Kazutoko in all Wikimedia Projects. Do you think that?--Kazutoko@jawp (Talk@enwp|History) 14:03, 20 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I think your word on the Japanese wiki should be sufficient to know he isn't you, since you control ja:User:Kazutoko. Although a checkuser could check as well if they wanted, I don't see why it would be necessary. There are very few people who have checkuser on multiple projects. — Carl (CBM · talk) 14:44, 20 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
They don't keep checkuser data that far back as far as I know. The account still has edits which means it can't be usurped as per policy - however it is clearly impersonating you. As you only have en-1 I presume you are not going to be contributing here and it is all about the imposter. I am going to block User:Kazutoko for having a misleading username. ∆ ← Betacommand

Note:
  • The target username meets the requirements for usurpation.

Clerk note: The target account was blocked indefinitely by Pgk for username policy violation [4]. WjBscribe 12:31, 22 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

True, But since that time WP:U has changed, prior to recently non-Latin character in usernames were reason to block. But since SUL is coming that policy has changed and that username is now allowable per policy. Betacommand (talkcontribsBot) 01:43, 24 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Ohh, someone with a unicode shape as a username. That would be unique. --(Review Me) R ParlateContribs@ (Let's Go Yankees!) 01:47, 24 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I believe (but have not rigorously verified) that it is a Greek letter Delta (Δ). — Carl (CBM · talk) 02:15, 24 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
that is one meaning of the symbol, In science and math it means the change in or simpler change' Betacommand (talkcontribsBot) 02:20, 24 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm..I was going to ask, then why doesn't Betacommand just become the greek letter beta, but then I realized it looks exactly the same as the letter B (regular B and greek Β). Anyway, that explains why that symbol was unicode. --(Review Me) R ParlateContribs@ (Let's Go Yankees!) 02:21, 24 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
actualy the geek beta is β which is close to but not exactly like the B. But I dont like the way that Beta looks I like the delta symbol better. Betacommand (talkcontribsBot) 02:27, 24 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not renaming a controversial editor to an untypeable username (that some may only see as a square anyway). I can see NO benefit to this change at all and lots of problems. Secretlondon 15:02, 25 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

 Not done -- affirm Secretlondon and mark -- Cecropia 18:14, 28 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I must protest this. There have been other users who have a controversial past that have been renamed. this username does not violate WP:U so I would like an explanation besides IDONTLIKEIT thanks Betacommand (talkcontribsBot) 18:19, 28 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I have to say I agree. If the name isn't violating policy, then I'd have to say your own opinions on it aren't really important. It's a basic unicode symbol, right? Wikipedia is practically unreadable if it isn't in UTF encoding, so people shouldn't have problems. WjBscribe 12:20, 22 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not comfortable with renaming users on the English language wikipedia to untypable (and in many cases undisplayable) usernames. I'm not doing any until SUL comes in, if it ever does. Usernames displaying as squares breaks things for many users, the only benefit is a minor one to the user account renamed. I don't see the balance to be beneficial to the project.  Clerk note: We usually reverse usurp for "established users." Now Apanda created the account and had an edit in September, but really didn't start to edit until May. Do we go with the date of the creation of the account, or since they began to edit? ~ Wikihermit 02:04, 28 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Apanda's been editing quite solidly for over a month and created his account last September. He's made nearly 400 edits. I would have thought its fine - but it is a borderline case and the crat who reviews the request will have to whether in their discretion that's sufficiently established. WjBscribe 02:34, 28 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
If it matters when I began to edit, I made edits using IP address 128.12.179.47 before I knew that you could create a user name (first edit 12 November 2005). Then I also made edits with IP address 72.25.91.86 in July 2006, and have forgotten to sign in a few times and edited with IP addresses 68.183.197.114 and 66.245.255.28. Is there some way to replace the IP addresses with my username? apanda 15:22, 28 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • As your account is very new, it is unlikely you will be allowed to usurp any account. I suggest you look for an account that isn't on Special:listusers (ie. one that isn't taken) and make a request at Wikipedia:Changing username if you really want to be renamed.
