A gate-array is a partially finished integrated circuit which usually consists of a matrix of groups of transistors that are tied together in the last phases of manufacturer to implement different gates. The gates are tied together at this same time to form different functions.

This allows the mass production of the basic parts with the customization only occuring in the final phase of manufacture, offering a quicker fabrication time, and lower cost when compared to the alternatives of "standard-cell" and "full-custom" designs.
