Song |
"Dynamite" is a song by British recording artist Taio Cruz. It was written by Benny Blanco, Taio Cruz, Max Martin, Bonnie McKee, and Dr. Luke, and produced by Dr. Luke and Benny Blanco for the international version of the singer's second album, Rokstarr. In his native UK, it was released as the first single from his compilation album The Rokstarr Collection. On 30 May 2010 it was released to US and Canadian radio stations as his second single and across Europe as his fourth single. The official remix features new label mate, Jennifer Lopez. The song became Cruz's second number one single on the UK Singles Chart and Billboard's Canadian Hot 100 and US Pop Songs chart. It also topped the charts in Australia, Ireland and New Zealand, and became a top ten hit in Austria, Belgium, Germany, Norway, Switzerland, and the United States.
Background and release
After his debut U.S. single hit number one "Break Your Heart", "Dynamite" was added to Top 40 radio stations on 1 June 2010.[1] The song was released in the UK on 23 August 2010.[2] According to Rap Up magazine, Cruz has recorded an official remix to the song with American singer and label mate, Jennifer Lopez.[3] According to Cruz "The song 'Dynamite' itself is about when you go to the club and when you go to a party and when you're just going out ... you got to feel like, 'I'm just gonna explode.'"[4]
Critical reception
The song has met with mixed to positive reviews from contemporary music critics. While reviewing "Rokstarr", Jon Caramanica from The New York Times gave a mixed review, saying that the song have "vapid lyrics to navigate (“Hit the floor cause that’s my plans plans plans plans/I’m wearing all my favorite brands brands brands brands,”), but they don’t disrupt the mood, which is emphatic and rarely sensual".[5] Nick Levine from Digital Spy rated the song 4 out of 5 stars, gaving a positive review, naming it "a suitably Eurohousey club pumper, it's essentially a cheap, tasty and entirely satisfying banger".[6]
Chart perfomance
Dynamite" debuted at number 26 on the Billboard Hot 100 and at number 13 on the Digital Songs chart, selling 83,000 copies in its opening week.[7] The single rose to number 14 on the week ending 10 July 2010 and on the week ending 21 August 2010, the single climbed to a peak of #2,[8] giving Taio Cruz his second top three single in the US. It also became Cruz's second consecutive number one single on Billboard's Hot Dance Airplay chart in its August 21, 2010 issue.
The single debuted on the Canadian Hot 100 at number eight on the week ending 17 June 2010, marking Cruz's second top ten hit in the country. The following week the single fell to number nine, where it remained for four consecutive weeks. On the week ending 18 September 2010, the song peaked at number one, becoming Cruz's second Canadian number one single, following "Break Your Heart"'s two week run at the top spot in May 2010.
On the chart dated August 16, 2010, "Dynamite" topped the New Zealand Singles Chart,[9] and was certified gold, selling 7,500 copies.[10]
The song top the Irish Singles Chart in its first week, becoming the singer's first number one, following previous number two hit 'Break Your Heart'.[11]
On August 29, 2010, "Dynamite" charted number 1 on the UK Singles Chart. This became Taio's second UK number 1. It beat "Club Can't Handle Me" by Flo Rida featuring David Guetta and "Love the Way You Lie" by Eminem featuring Rihanna.
Music video
On July 9 MTV released an exclusive sneak peek of the video.[12] The video also premiered on 17 July.[13] According to MTV, Cruz "rides a fast bike and stops by a school where he kicks off a firework party with the ladies in attendance. Toward the end of the video, the moon sets and the British pop star gives an impromptu concert of sorts with the lady mechanics as his audience. Soon, an enormous, fiery explosion goes off behind the star, before subsiding into a shower of sparks, which, according to Cruz, is the perfect backdrop for the subtext of his song".[14] Accordind to Cruz his inspiration came from "wanting to do things on a bike" since his previous videos included cars and boats..[15] "So you're gonna see me spin the tires on this, which is pretty cool!". One of the vehicles brought for the video shoot was a "massive truck" which was used to film big screen project "Universal Soldier". Speaking of the shoot he said "I've never done a video that has this many props in it. "We've got the most amazing, wrecked cars."[4]
Live performances
Taio performed the song for the first time on Live with Regis & Kelly on 9 June 2010.[16] Later, he also performed on Jimmy Kimmel Live on 10 June 2010. He has also performed it at T4 On The Beach.[17] He also performed it on America's Got Talent. On 23 August 2010, he performed the song on GMTV.[18]
