Rangeela (1995) is a Hindi movie, a product of the Bollywood film industry. It was directed by Ram Gopal Varma, and starred Aamir Khan, Urmila Matondkar, and Jackie Shroff.
Rangeela was Music director A. R. Rahman's first Hindi movie with an original score. The film features famous playback singer Asha Bhosle, who made something of a comeback singing Rahman's extremely popular music.
Rangeela is considered a landmark in Indian commercial cinema; it features breakthrough performances, a superlative music score and streetwise direction, despite a predictable and weak plot.
Rangeela showed off the talents of principal actors Aamir Khan and Urmila Matondkar. Aamir doffed his "sweet college kid" persona and did a well-researched street urchin; Urmila showed that she could act and dance. Her character was direct, frank, open, and sexy -- a modern girl, not the shy, sweet homebody favored by traditionalists and depicted in so many Bollywood films.
Mili is a beautiful Mumbai girl with a job as a dancer in Bollywood movies. She watches from the sidelines as spoiled Bollywood prima donnas preen and fuss, and dreams of being a movie star herself. The impossible comes true and she gets her big chance. Not only does she become a star, superstar Raj falls in love with her. But what about Munna, her downstairs neighbor, a handsome, feisty street kid? Can Mili leave her old life and her old friend behind?
