The show is set up in rural Rajasthan and based on the practice of child marriage. It is about Anandi, a young girl married to Jagdish (J, the only grandson of Kalyani Devi (Amma garu) and Dharmveer Singh. Kalyani Devi is a widow with a very high regard for Hindu rituals and superstitions. She has two sons, Kannaya and Baburao. kannaya and Jamuna are married for 20 years, without kids. Jamuna has had many miscarriages as she was married at very young age. Baburao and his wife Sumitra have two kids Jagdish and his elder sister Swapna.
Set in rural Rajasthan, ''Balika Vadhu'' follows the story of Anandi (Toral Rasputra) who was married to Jagdish when she was 8.
Anandi is the only daughter of Kanaka rao and Bhagwati . She is a bright, talented, happy 8 year old girl, who aspires to become a teacher like her Sandhya Teacher. But her parents are keen to get her married to Jagdish, grandson of Kalyani Devi. Despite of a lot of effort from Sandhya to stop the marriage, Anandi and Jagdish get married, after which she is not sent to school.
