The Ziggurat is the first and only studio album of The Constructus Corporation; it was released in June 2002. The album contained two CDs and an 88-page pink hard-covered book containing a hand-written hip-hop fantasy story by Watkin Tudor Jones.
Background and recording
In early 2002, Watkin Tudor Jones disbanded his other hip-hop group, MaxNormal.TV, because he wanted to focus on other work. He moved to Cape Town, South Africa to collaborate with South African rappers such as Felix Laband. These sessions spawned the "Man With No Name" track on African Dope's Cape Of Good Dope compilation in 2002, which later gradually mutated into The Constructus Corporation outfit.
Production
After forming The Constructus Corporation in early 2002, the band began production of The Ziggurat. During production, Anri du Toit joined the group under the stage name Anica The Snuffling.
Packaging
In June 2002, The Ziggurat was packaged with a book containing two CDs and an 88-page pink hard-covered book containing a hand-written hip-hop fantasy story by Jones, which follows the adventures of two kids on a giant futuristic floating world/shopping mall called The Ziggurat. The book featured detailed etched digital illustrations by Nikhil Singh. There was also a series of videos produced by African Dope Records entitled "How To Become A Better Person" narrated by Jones. It featured Jones playing Rick Flare as well as a short clip of "Brotherly Love" featuring Jones and Anica The Snuffling.
Release
The Ziggurat was released on June 3, 2002. There was a 6-week delay in the release due to wrong cliche designs being printed, customs confiscating and then losing 3000 CDs, and a dispute over an unpaid printing bill.
Critical reception
The Ziggurat received generally positive reviews from critics. Sputnikmusic said that The Ziggurat is a rich concept album featuring some of the best beats to come out of South Africa, and a lush overarching storyline that showcases Watkin Tudor Jones at his creative paramount.[1]. 90% of Amazon.com customers rated The Ziggurat 5 stars and 10% rated the album 4 stars.[2]
