Revision as of 23:37, 15 January 2007
Template:Infobox musical artist 2 Robert (Bobby) Andrew Flynn (born 22 January, 1981 in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia) was a Top 12 finalist on the reality television show Australian Idol 2006. Bobby performs with his ensemble The Omega III, he is also an experienced songwriter and solo performer. Bobby grew up with a passion for music, and was surrounded by influences in the home and neighbouring households. As well as singing, Bobby is able to play the piano and guitar. His father and his sister Sarah are also musicians.
Bobby attended St. Joseph's College, Gregory Terrace in Brisbane where he graduated in 1998. He was a member of Barrett House.
Australian Idol
Bobby performed his original composition "The Boy Had Trouble" and advanced from Group 4 to the finals of Australian Idol.
Bobby received his first "Touchdown" from Mark Holden in Week 5 (Disco Week) of the Finals, for his off-beat interpretation of Rick James' hit "Superfreak". Subsequently, he was considered by some media pundits, including Mark Mordue of the Sydney Morning Herald[1] and Denise Scott of Vega FM,[2] as symbolising a new trend in Australian Idol away from its traditional demographic and as part of a push to improve flagging show ratings by the show's producers.
Media coverage of the Bobby Flynn "concept" has been divided, as expressed in an article by The Age's John Mangan entitled "Here's Bobby - idol to some, idiot to others".[3]
Bobby was eliminated from the competition on 16 October, after performing the Fleetwood Mac hit "Rhiannon" the day before (during Acoustic week). With visible shock on the faces of the judging panel, Bobby was invited back to perform on the special Up Close and Personal Tuesday night program, where contestants were invited to perform an original composition. Bobby left the program, with a rendition of the song that had secured his place at the audition stages, The Boy Had Trouble.
Releases
Bobby's debut 4 Track EP with his band, the Omega III, has been released and is currently being marketed by Independent Brisbane based label, Regent Road Enterprises.
Bobby will appear on a compilation album called The Hopesmiths Project which is due for release in December 2006 (http://www.hopesmiths.com). All moneys raised by the CD will go to Childhood Cancer Support a small Australian charity helping kids with cancer and their families. Bobby Flynn wears the clothing label by young designer kate creasey Musicians Gun Clothing.[citation needed]
