Taman Melawati is a self-contained town within the Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur. It is located in the Melawati township on the Klang Valley border. This town is administrated by Majlis Perbandaran Ampang Jaya (MPAJ). Despite being surrounded by forest reserves, this town is strategically located 10 minutes' drive away from the city centre.

The International School of Kuala Lumpur (Elementary Campus) and Malaysian Institute of Art (MIA) are located in this town. A private hospital, Damai Service Hospital, and a clubhouse, kklub, are also located in this town. Zoo Negara, the national zoo, is located nearby. There is a night market open on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

One of the hills in this town, Bukit Tabur, is a popular hiking spot while the Klang Gates Dam is the first reservoir in Malaysia and one of the major supplier of drinking water to residents of Klang Valley. Among residents of this town are Malaysian film director Yusof Haslam and Daim Zainuddin, the former Finance Minister of Malaysia.

Accessibility

This town can be accessed by Rapid KL buses (303 from Lembah Keramat, 304 from Wangsa Maju LRT station) and Len Seng bus 191 from Masjid Jamek. The town is strategically located along the Middle Ring Road 2 (MRR2) and 5km away from the Ampang-Kuala Lumpur Elevated Highway (AKLEH) which connects to the city centre. Alternatively, the city centre can also be accessed by Jalan Ampang and Jalan Genting Klang.

Development

Development are rapidly taking place in this town. Among completed projects are Melawati Square, a 3-building complex of shoplots, and Melawati Heights, a residental area with scenic view of Kuala Lumpur skyline. Two further projects, Melawati Urban 1 and Melawati Urban 2 are expected to be completed and opened in 2007.

Confusion

Since this town is on the north-east Klang Valley border, there is confusion whether the town is in Kuala Lumpur or Selangor. To clarify this issue, authorities have placed two boards stating 'Sempadan Daerah Kuala Lumpur' or 'Kuala Lumpur District Border', one along Jalan Klang Gate and the other near the Taman Melawati exit of Middle Ring Road 2 (MRR2). The town's postal code (53100) confirms the fact this town is in Kuala Lumpur and it can be found in most maps of Kuala Lumpur.
