(this page is about a project on historic battles, not about disagreements and edit wars on Wikiprojects)

First, an important note for everyone to remember:

A few Wikipedians have gotten together to make some suggestions about how we might organize data in articles about Battles. These are only suggestions, things to give you focus and to get you going, and you shouldn't feel obligated in the least to follow them. But if you don't know what to write or where to begin, following the below guidelines may be helpful. Mainly, we just want you to write articles!

Structure and Format

The article List of battles should contain all of the known battles of historical significance.

Article titles should follow the format: Battle of Gettysburg. If disambiguation is needed years are added in parenthesis, as in Battle of Dunbar (1652)

The term Battle is a good NPOV generic term and is preferred over substitutes like attack, slaughter, raid, etc. These latter terms may be used if their usage is the most commonly used to describe a particular battle.

It has been suggested that wikipedia should contain an entry for every major battle. The suggested qualification for a major battle are:

  • Every historical battle that had 10000 or more men on either side.
  • Every battle that is generally considered decisive for the outcome of a (civil) war.

I suggest that, aside from the project box as currently present at the Battle of Lützen (1632), every battle has at least an attempt to describe:

  • The prelude to the battle: Why, previous movement of forces, and which campaign.
  • A description of the battle.
  • The battle's aftermath.

Hierarchy Definition

No classification of battles has been defined. See this example on dividing a topic into a hierarchy.
