The company was founded in London in 1991, and began to operate in the US in 1994. It is now headquartered in Chicago, with offices in London, Los Angeles and Tokyo.

Ghost in the Shell, Perfect Blue and Ninja Scroll have all had a theatrical release. Other popular titles they distribute are the two Neon Genesis Evangelion movies: Death and Rebirth and The End of Evangelion, Read or Die, Kai Doh Maru, Virus Buster Serge, Macross Plus, Appleseed, Blood: The Last Vampire and the Lupin movie The Castle of Cagliostro. Manga Entertainment UK also sublicences some titles such as Akira and Patlabor from American companies who do not have a UK arm.

It is now owned by Anchor Bay Entertainmment, part of IDT Corp.

Controversy

Over the years Manga has been the subject of many complaints from western anime-fans.

  • A frequent complaint is that their name is inacurate and posibly even ignorant of Japanese culture.
  • Some have accused Manga of trying to market anime as exploitation films by focusing on ultra-violence. Many of their release have become infamous for their content such as "Legend of the Overfiend"(a hentai series). More vocal critics even blame Manga for giving anime a bad name in certain parts of the west.
  • In their early years Manga often tamperd whit the original material they had the rights to. Changes included removing Japanese songs, replacing the original soundtrack whit rock-music, and creating dubs whit added profanity. This declined over time but re-releases of older shows still contain edits.
  • Their DVD-release of "the End of Evangelion" was delayed, and when finaly released it contained bugs that made it incompatible whit some DVD-players.
