Gary Tanaka founded the investment company Amerindo. He was an undergraduate at MIT, and then did a PhD at Imperial College London. He is perheps best known for his generous donation to Imperial, which later resulted in the Tanaka Business School at the College.

He went to both MIT and Imperial and said he wanted to put something back. What he put into Imperial was a £27m donation for a new building at the business school, which has been combined with a new front entrance for Imperial.

He has since been investigated for fraud, leading to the possibility the Tanaka Business School was, at least, partially funded by money obtained illegally.
