Mew is a Psychic-type Pokémon that was "discovered" at the beginning of the Pokémon Red, Blue, Green, and Yellow in the Amazon Rainforest, according to a scientist's journal in Cinnabar Mansion.
Since this Pokémon was so rare, scientists attempted to clone it but the experiment went wrong and resulted in the creation of Mewtwo. According to the diaries on Cinnabar, Mew wound up somehow giving birth to Mewtwo.
In the games, this Pokémon is nearly impossible to get (as is noted here) and must be obtained from Nintendo personnel at special events called "Pokéconventions" where they were "handed out" to the trainers that come. (That is, if they're not obtained with some cheating device.)
Mew can be caught using the "Mew glitch", which is detailed in a guide on the GameFAQs Pokémon Blue FAQ page. There is currently no known way to actually catch Mew without using this glitch, or a Gameshark.
Due to Mew's rarity, it is likely one of the most often "cloned", or duplicated, Pokémon, particularly if the person doing the cloning cannot obtain another Mew otherwise.
Name Origin
Mew's concept is supposedly based off a cat. The name Mew is the same word as that referring to a sound made by a feline.
Pokédex descriptions
- Red/Blue Pokédex description: So rare that it is still said to be a mirage by many experts. Only a few people have seen it worldwide!
- Yellow Pokédex description: When viewed through a microscope, this Pokémon's short, fine, delicate hair is seen.
- Gold Pokédex description: Apparently, it appears only to those people who are pure of heart and have a strong desire to see it.
- Silver Pokédex description: Its DNA is said to contain the genetic codes of all Pokémon, so it can use all kinds of techniques.
- Crystal Pokédex description: Because it can learn any move, some people began research to see if it is the ancestor of all Pokémon.
