Revision as of 01:09, 27 July 2004

Administrators have the ability to "protect" pages or images such that they cannot be modified except by other admins. This ability is only to be used in limited circumstances.

Policy

  1. Do not edit a temporarily protected page except to add a protected page notice.
  2. Do not protect a page you are involved in an edit dispute over.
  3. Protect the page supplying a reason
  4. Add {{protected}} to the top of the temporarily protected page and make mention of the protection in the edit summary.
  5. List pages you protect on Wikipedia:Protected page; if it is protected due to a conflict, you may want to list all user names/IPs involved in the conflict.
  6. Consider encouraging a resolution between the disputing parties.
  7. Remove the protection (while supplying a reason) once the conflict has been resolved
  8. Remove {{protected}} from the top of an unprotected page and make mention of the removal in the edit summary.

See Wikipedia:Protection policy for more detailed advice and the purpose of protected pages.

Rationale

See meta:Protected pages considered harmful, meta:edit wars

Viewing the source of a protected page

To view the source of e.g. Main Page, use one of the following:

The latter also gives metadata (see m:page metadata) about the last edit. It is an XML file; tags are coded in its source, and plainly shown when rendered by the browser. However, blank lines in the wikisource are shown in the xml-source, but not in the rendering.

List of protected pages

If you protect a page, or find a protected page not listed here, please add it to this list. Please also add a short description of ten words or less indicating why you protected it. If you need to say more, discuss on the talk page of the page you protected. Also see Wikipedia:protection log for recent unprotections, which replaces the manual list of recently unprotected pages. The {{protected}} header automatically adds Category:Protected to the page, adding it to the Category's listing.

Semi-permanently protected (system administration reasons)

The following pages are automatically generated and are usually protected for system administration reasons:

User pages

User pages and their subpages are frequently targets for vandalism, and may be protected upon request of the user associated with the page if there is a history of vandalism. Add protected user pages to this list. User pages should not be protected unless there is a history of vandalism, and should be unprotected as soon as practicable.

  1. User:66.36.249.149
  2. User:Deb
  3. User:Kenneð
  4. User:Mikkalai
  5. User:Montrealais
  6. User:Roozbeh
  7. User:WhisperToMe
  8. User:Zenogantner
  • User:Blankfaze - repeated vandalism, even moving vandalism, from 172.172.68.34, 205.188.117.17, 172.140.68.81, 149.174.164.81, and User:Aomia (for Aomia see [1])
  • User: JCarriker user page was vandalized to include racial and ethnic pejoratives; esp. those demeening African-Americans, Homosexuals, Jews, Muslims and U.S. Southerners. There is no need for anyone to edit my user page anyway, that's what talk pages are for. -JCarriker 06:05, Jul 25, 2004 (UTC)
  • User:Guanaco/AOL is protected because it is a list of AOL proxies. If someone were to tamper with these, it could cause serious confusion. I don't want to have to check the history every time I use it. Guanaco 06:35, Jul 25, 2004 (UTC)

User talk pages

User talk pages should only be protected in cases of persistent vandalism, and then only for as brief a period as possible.

User talk pages presently protected include:

Pages protected due to edit wars or vandalism

latest at bottom

  • Israel Shahak - edit war RK, Zero and DanKeshet, in mediation so don't unprotect please
  • Anti-Semitism - edit war between RK and Simonides. Protected requested by David Gerard. →Raul654 19:52, Jul 13, 2004 (UTC)
  • Leo Strauss - edit war between AndyL and Herschelkrustofsky

  • David Newton protected Global warming: Three reverts rule has been violated by both sides of this revert war. Page has been returned to state more like the version prior to the revert war. 11:44, 16 Jul 2004 (UTC)
  • Ustase - continuing edit war between Nikola Smolenski and GeneralPatton (and others siding with them) Ambivalenthysteria 01:29, 17 Jul 2004 (UTC)
  • Kobe Bryant - anon insists on including his accuser's name; Moink defends consensus reached on Talk:Kobe Bryant's accuser. Requested by Moink. [[User:Meelar|Meelar (talk)]] 17:08, 2004 Jul 24 (UTC)
Just to clarify, there's not a consensus on Talk:Kobe Bryant's accuser, there's a majority opinion (18 to 9). But there's no "default action" in this case (as opposed to, say, vfd or rfa). moink 22:55, 25 Jul 2004 (UTC)
