** There shouldn't be any problems with renaming and redirects, it's the same topic: we all "shower" the "baby" and the new mother with gifts. The timing varies. Traditional choices of gifts also are different. Some cultures may have interesting and unique foods at the party, too. -- [[User:PFHLai|PFHLai]] 18:44, 2004 Jul 29 (UTC)

Revision as of 18:44, 29 July 2004

Each week an Article of the week will be picked using this page. This is a specific topic which either has no article or a basic stub page, the aim being to have a featured-standard article by the end of the week, from widespread cooperative editing.

The project aims to fill gaps in Wikipedia, to give users a focus and to give us all something to be proud of. Anyone can nominate an article and can vote for the nominated articles. Every Sunday, the votes are tallied, and the winner will be promoted for a week to potential contributors.

The current article of the week is Medieval warfare.

Previous winners can be found at /History.
Removed nominations can be found at /Removed.

Selecting the next Article of the week

The next winner will be selected on Sunday 1 August, 18:00 (UTC).

Voting

Please vote for as many of the following options as you like. Please add only support votes. Opposing votes will not affect the result, as the winner is simply the one with the most support votes (see Approval voting). Only registered users should vote. The one nominated first wins in case of a tie.

Enter your votes by just inserting a new line with "# ~~~~" which will add your username and a time stamp in a new numbered list item.

Nominations

New nominations can be made at any time and should be added at the end. Please use the template. If the page you are nominating already exists, please add {{AOTW}} to the top of its talk page. This expands to: Template:AOTW

Considerations for nominations

  • Please only nominate articles which don't currently exist or are stubs.
  • Giving reasons as to why an article should become the AOTW may assist others in casting their vote.
  • Can the wider community easily contribute to the article? Or is it something only a small number of people will know about?

Pruning

A nominated page will be moved to /Removed if it has not received 4 votes after 7 days on the list, 8 votes after 14 days, 12 votes after 21 days, and so on. See the talk page for discussion of the pruning policy.

Candidates for next week

Comments:

  • A historically important newspaper, there's no info on the paper during the Soviet years.
  • I originally voted for this, but then I realised that I doubt there's all that much we'll be able to find, compared to some other topics. There's likely to be few enough information sources that one or two people could probably do just as good a job as everyone else would if it were selected AOTW. Comments

  • Just a series of lists. The "overview" amounts to a paragraph or two. Pretty weak considering the historical significance of this period.
  • I think this topic is too large. Like Roman Empire above, a Wikiproject may be more appropriate .... -- PFHLai 23:12, 2004 Jul 13 (UTC) On second thoughts, a more elaborated Renaissance page with short abstracts to serve as entry points (or intro's) to the many other related pages would be nice, too, rather than just having the list of "sub-topics" there right now. -- PFHLai 04:39, 2004 Jul 23 (UTC)
  • A good general topic with lots to be said. Ambitious, but parts can always be spun out into separate articles. -- ALoan (Talk) 22:42, 14 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Comments:

  • This article is rather sad and very stubby, especially contrasted with the article on war and other former and proposed AOTW such as siege and medieval warfare. I move that that a decent article on diplomacy is highly appropriate and timely. --10:20, 17 Jul 2004 (UTC)
    • Diplomacy is an important part of human civilization, yet very few people practice diplomacy for the sake of diplomacy. There are many, many war games, but few diplomacy games. (And most of those are simply war games in disguise.) Maybe that's why the article is so stubby. :-) Tangents aside, I support making diplomacy an AOTW. --Benc 04:12, Jul 24, 2004 (UTC)

  • For such a crucial event in the civil rights movement, this is a pretty cruddy stub - and a fairly large hole in Wikipedia's coverage. I think it'd be perfect for AOTW - there's so much that could be added. Ambivalenthysteria 15:09, 17 Jul 2004 (UTC)

But this also means good content is easily accessible for merging and reorganizing to give Babylonia a makeover, and hopefully turn it into a nice 'featured article'.
