Shinŭiju or Sinuiju (신의주; 新義州) is the capital of North P'yŏngan Province, North Korea, on the border with China. The border is marked by the Yalu River, which empties into Korea Bay at this location. The city is connected to Dandong, China by bridge via the Sino-Korea Friendship Bridge (also known as the China-Korea Friendship Bridge). This is one of the only ways to enter North Korea.
The city is an endpoint on the Gyeongui railroad line (known as the P'yŏngui in the North).
On September 2002, Shinŭiju Special Administrative Region (Sinŭiju T'ŭkpyŏl Haengjŏnggu; 신의주특별행정구; 新義州特別行政區) was established near the city of Shinŭiju to try introducing the market economy.
