The Special Weapons Dalek (Sometimes shortened to SWD) is a heavily-armoured Dalek first featured in Doctor Who in the only Sylvester McCoy/Dalek story "Remembrance Of The Daleks".
Unlike a conventional Dalek, the Special Weapons Dalek has no plunger or gun. There is an enormous energy discharging cannon mounted on the front of the armoured casing. Several red squares around the dome are in place of the usual eyestalk. Special Weapons Daleks do not speak, but do have massive firepower.
When we first see the Special Weapons Dalek, it is used by Davros and his loyal "Imperial Daleks" in the same way as soldiers use a tank. The firepower is so great, that there are no remains of two Daleks, except for two burn-marks in the road. The livery is supposed to be white body with golden bumps, but due to so much action in battle, the entire Dalek is covered in oil and grime.
In "The Ultimate Dalek Survival Guide", these Special Weapons Daleks are described as "STANDARD BATTLE TYPE", and also explains their history. Originally Daleks that defected from the power of the Dalek Emperor, they were shot with astro-thesial radiation. Instead of killing them, the Daleks went out of control and increased their firepower. The Dalek Emperor was so impressed, that these Daleks were placed in enormous shells and given better weapons to control their power. From then on, they became Special Weapons Daleks. Most are controlled by a Minder unit, making them incredibly ruthless and unstoppable killing machines. The Special Weapons Dalek(s) also prize of a special "schrellic gland", secreting a sticky fluid out onto the reinforced Dalekenium shell as a call for backup, often mistaken for a lubricant. If used too often, the Dalek inside could drown internally because of the schrellic gland.
The Special Weapons Dalek has made no further appearances in Doctor Who, but has been referred to in the book "War Of The Daleks".
