Revision as of 11:30, 3 December 2006

Hi! My name is Onur Kerim Hassan. I was born on November 4th 1991. I am a British-born, Turkish student currently studying at Mill Hill School.

I was born in Newham General Hospital, Hackney, London.

For your own ease, this page has also been translated into Simple English. I am still working on a Turkish version, and in the future there will be French, German and Latin versions, too. I'm currently teaching myself Japanese. I have been told that it's hard without a teacher, but I'm willing to take that challenge.

Origins

I have a Turkish mother and a Turkish Cypriot father. However, my father has roots linking back to Izmir,Turkey, although he was born in the United Kingdom after his parents had migrated there. On my mother's side of the family, my grandparents were born in Macedonia, as it was under Ottoman rule at the time of their birth. However, at the decline of the Ottoman Empire, many Ottoman Turks fled back to what is now the Türkiye Cumhuriyeti (the Republic of Turkey). I also have Afghan roots linking to my great-grandfather on my mother's side.

Biography

Early childhood

Due to my Turkish upbringing, my first language was Turkish. However, at the age of two, I endured months of almost complete silence. I was seen by many doctors, and at first they assumed that I had Autistic Spectrum Disorder. However, in the end I wasn't diagnosed as Autistic, as they later found that I just had speech problems and severe shyness. The doctors advised my parents that I should see a speech therapist regularly, to improve both my speech and my confidence.

At the age of four, I attended Eldon Infant School. In spite of my 'problems', though, I never spoke unless required to do so, and rarely contributed in class activities or discussions. Once a week I would attend a speech therapist, usually during school hours.

I continued to attend my school until the age of 7, when my parents decided that I required private education, to improve my discipline and intelligence. So they sent me off to Salcombe Preparatory School.

Trivia

  • My first word was "hungry", surprisingly not because I was hungry myself, but because I lived near a pub called Hungry Horse in Edmonton, and therefore I said my second word immediately afterwards.
  • I absolutely love chocolate.
