In 1966 it was decided that Lancaster University should have another college, since the university was growing. After two years of meetings, Furness was built. The aim is to create a balanced life of sport, social, and culture, where staff and students can get to know each other. The Furness motto, "Everywhere else is nowhere", sums up the social reputation that Furness College represents.

The college bar, specialises in real ale and appeared in the most recent Good Beer Guide. The reputation for ale extends to an annual real ale festival, held in the college bar. It is host to college socials and various campus societies.

Furness College is situated on the Lancaster campus, on the south spine, and is home to the History and Religious Studies departments of the university.
