Rake is an art/indie/rock/noise/free jazz skronk musical ensemble that came to being in North Virgina in the shadow of the Nation’s Capitol. Not to be confused with the punk and art damage bands that are associated the Washington, DC underground music scene, Rake are one of those bands that straddles the line dividing high art from low art and has marched to their own wacked out drummer for over 16 years now. Band members Vinnie Van Go-Go (Jim Ayre), Bill Kellum, and C-Man (Carl Moller) released their first record in 1990, a 7” 45 rpm record called "Subterranean Marijuana Garden." It’s punkesque leanings did not accurately foreshadow the rich offerings to appear in the years to come. Recordings upon recordings, with improvisation being the rule rather than the exception, let to a series of cassettes, records, and CDs into the new Millennium.
