Starfleet ranks and insignia are fictional titles and badges that appear in the Star Trek science fiction universe. Such ranks and insignia form the hierarchy of Starfleet, the defensive and scientific exploration arm of the United Federation of Planets. Starfleet's ranks and insignia are based on those used by the United States Navy.
Starfleet ranks and titles have evolved through live action productions, official publications, and the fanon of the Star Trek Expanded Universe. Paramount Pictures, which controls Star Trek licensing, identifies as canon only material from the live action films and series.[1] Licensed secondary sources also document these ranks, while at times filling in gaps and sometimes contradicting what appears on screen. Novels, magazines, roleplaying manuals, and other fan literature sometimes posit the existence of additional ranks or extrapolate the appearance of otherwise unknown insignia.
The following compilation of Starfleet ranks and insignia includes official ranks from series productions, as well as other licensed secondary sources.

Conjectural ranks
Star Trek publications and literature, including officially licensed ones, sometimes offer additional ranks that have not been mentioned in official publications or spoken of in live action productions. In addition, these sources have offered alternative insignia for several Starfleet ranks, contradicting the ones shown on screen.
In other cases, costuming errors cause characters to appear with unusual insignia. For example, in "Man of the People", Geordi LaForge wears a rank insignia that is the reverse of the usual lieutenant commander insignia, having two hollow circles and one solid. This was interpreted by the magazine Starlog as the insignia of a "second lieutenant commander".[citation needed]
Other insignia appear but the rank they denote is uncertain. Examples include Kosinski's insignia in "Where No One Has Gone Before" and Luther Sloan's insignia in "Inquisition".
One officially licensed source that provides conjectured Starfleet ranks is the Star Trek: Next Generation Officer's Manual, a roleplaying manual published by FASA. This manual includes insignia for TNG-era commodores, fleet captains, and branch admirals. This last is based on a shoulder board worn by Leonard McCoy in his appearance in "Encounter at Farpoint".
