Crimson Editor is a freeware source-available text editor, source code editor, and HTML editor for Windows. Many of the features and user interfaces are similar to that of EditPlus, most noticeably Windows shell integration, tabbed document interface, syntax highlighting, multiple undo/redo, column mode editing, bracket matching, auto-indentation, spell checking, direct editing of text files in FTP and the integration with compilers. Unicode (although only for Latin characters) and various newlines are supported.

In addition, Crimson Editor supports the use of macros, which can be found in applications like Microsoft Office. The built-in calculator can evaluate simple expressions. Basic mathematics functions, like those found in the standard C library, and date functions are also available.

In April 2006, the question was reopened on the Crimson Editor forum as to whether a new version would be created, since no version had been released since September 2004, and several attempts to contact the author had gone unanswered. In December 29, 2006, Ingyu Kang finally posted a message announcing Crimson Editor as an opensource project.

A ground-up rewrite based on Crimson Editor, led by a forum member 'Pete Spicer', has been started. It will be released as open-source software under the terms of the GNU General Public License, and under the name of Emerald Editor. As of June 2006, it is still in very early development.
