Canal Street is a busy local station located in Chinatown. The station was recently renovated. Due to platform lengthening in the 1940's and 1950's, there are two distinct sections of this station; the original portion has tile covered I-beams with small and large mosaics and an ornamental ceiling. The new portion has 1950's green tile at the ends of the platforms. There are also Independent Line-type direction "To Canal Street" signs. New lights are being installed. This station is quite complex and provides transfer to the Brooklyn-Manhattan Transit Corporation's Nassau Street and Broadway subway lines.

Some relative depths of the stations in the Canal Street comples are as follows:

  • BMT Broadway platforms, 40 feet below street
  • BMT bridge line platform, 50 feet
  • Lexinton Avenue subway platform, 20 feet
  • Nassau Street subway platform, 20 feet
