WorldCom (WCOM) is the United States's second largest long distance phone company (AT&T is the largest). WorldCom bought MCI and owns UUNet, a major player in the internet backbone.

In June, 2002, an internal audit discovered that $3.7 billion had been 'misaccounted.' A Securities and Exchange Commission investigation into these matters was launched on July 26 2002.
