A computer hacker is someone who enjoys getting around the technical limitations of computer systems, thus extending their capabilities. The first computer "hack" was the invention of the subroutine, which eliminated the need to repeat lengthy sections of identical instructions.

Hackers are often offended by the media's use of hacker as a synonym for "security cracker".
