Rules of the game

The first phase is warmups with Sam or Destiny and Jason selecting two (or sometimes three) people from the five or six contestants. They then go mano a mano in another round. Jason and Sam or Destiny, the neighborhood hosts, pick the neighborhood winner, and they meet up at the other player's house with Wilmer to make the final round that day "real personal".

In the final round each day, there are three rounds. The first is strictly based on the traditional "Yo Momma" jokes, with the second round based on what the other saw (with Wilmer) at their opposition's residence, and is followed by the final one-joke round, dubbed the "knockout". Wilmer, Sam or Destiny, and Jason then pick the best, agreeing by saying "Tu madre " (Spanish for "your mother") and the winner moves onto the "Best of the Week" show.

Season One was taped in Los Angeles, and aired in spring 2006. Season Two took place in New York City, and premiered on October 23, 2006. It was announced during the Season 2 Preview Show on October 13, 2006, that the third season will be filmed in Atlanta, Georgia and premiere on June 11, 2007 following a sneak preview on May 13th (Mother's Day in the USA). Houston, Texas; Dallas, Texas; Chicago, Illinois; Detroit, Michigan; Miami, Florida; and St. Louis, Missouri have been likely candidates for the fourth season.

Best Of The Week

As previously stated above, the four daily winners came back for a "Best Of The Week" battle. All four participate in a freestyle round, after which Wilmer and the co-hosts pick the best. The selected winner one calls out another of the daily winners. These two compete in a round of the dozens, as do the two remaining contestants, but in this round, the contestants are limited to only one or two subjects (cheap and dumb, poor and fat, etc.) To make it even more interesting, the four runners-up from that week's daily battles serve as the jury for these two battles, and determine which two advance to the finals. If the jury is tied, Wilmer and the other hosts the tie with their votes. After two finalists for that week are determined, a special guest joins Wilmer for the weekly final battle.

The weekly final battle consists of three rounds. They are based on speed (each player gets thirty seconds to rank on the other) or play "Joke 'Til You Choke" (see "Best of The City" for more information), dissing the other player's relation or friend who has come along for the final, and the knockout joke. In the end, the winner gets another $1,000 and also wins a game console, tickets to a sporting event or entertainment event (like a stand up performance of Mike Epps or a DMX concert), and in the Los Angeles season, dinner at either of two restaurants owned by Valderrama — Geisha House and Dolce. The gaming products won by the weekly champion have been a PlayStation Portable, Nintendo DS, Xbox 360, and Game Boy Micro in Season One, along with a Motorola Q cell phone, Helio cell phone, a Pioneer hand-held satellite receiver and a Nintendo DS Lite in Season Two.

Best of the Week runner-ups

"Best of the City"

After four weeks of competition, the winners are invited back again to determine an ultimate winner from the city, who would receive an additional $5,000.

As is the case for the "Best of the Week", the four weekly winners start by taunting their competitors in a free-for-all freestyle, after which the host chooses the best and he/she calls another of the contestants. The other two are paired. The pairs play dozens in freestyle until one is declared the winner by the jury panel, which are the weekly runners-up's mothers. After two rounds (described in each season), a final knockout joke section is played, and after this, the crew chooses the winner.

Season 1 (Best of LA)

Harp, who quickly gained popularity early on in the series with his high-pitched voice and physical antics while doing his jokes, beat Vakisha in the first round and Chuck defeated D.Redd in the other semifinal, judged by the mommas of the weekly Los Angeles runner-ups.

The first round of the finals was "Joke 'Til You Choke", where they made jokes on each other until one "chokes", as in cannot make up a retort. The second randomly paired two of the weekly runner-ups, and after one of the runner-ups insulted a finalist, the finalist then "bagged" on that runner-up. Then the knockout joke was played. Harp was declared the winner of the final dressed for the occasion, dressed with a blue cape and boxing gloves which read "Yo Momma" when put together.

Season 2 (Best of New York City)

In the freestyle round, Boomshard called out Cutless leaving the two others, BGB and Jonny Mal to face off. Like Season One, the runner-up's moms are selected as the jury. Boomshard had consistency throughout his battle defeating Cutless 3-1. BGB's creativity won the affection of the "mommas", defeating Jonny Mal with also a score of 3-1.

The first round of the final battle is called "New York City" where both competitors ping-pong jokes only relevant to NYC. The second round is the commonly known round "Joke Til You Choke" and finally the Knock-Out round. It was perhaps the craziest, most unpredictable battle in the history of Yo Momma, the final battle was close and only one pause determined the winner.

In the end, BGB reigned as New York City's undisputed top trash-talker, saying in his knockout that Boomshard's mom was so dumb, she bought Nick Cannon's latest album. The insult earned BGB $5000 and a Gateway laptop computer. Unlike Season One, Wilmer was so impressed with the final battle that he paid Boomshard $1000 despite losing because of his delivery and energy.
