Vol au vents are small canapes. They are circular pieces of puff pastry with a small hole which accomodates various filings, such as mushrooms, prawns, fruit, cheese etc. Vol au vents were staples of somewhat twee house parties in the seventies and eighties, of the sort portrayed in Mike Leigh's play Abigail's Party. Nowadays, they still pop up from time to time, with earnest at corporate catering for buffets but also somewhat ironically at nostalgic parties. See also Cheese Hedgehog
The name translates literally as "Fly in the wind"
