Telephone slamming is an illegal telecommunications practice of changing subscribers' long distance telephone service without their consent. Slamming could happen by mistake, but it may also happen when subscribers take a survey or enter a contest, among other things.
In the United States, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has rules that require a customer's approval before a long distance carrier can be changed.
Anti-slamming tips:
- Read the fine print of your telephone bill
- Ask your local phone carrier if they freeze your long distance carrier
- Hang up on telemarketers
