Colours are black for preference, with black and tan, red and dark grey also acceptable.

The breed in European in origin and dates back to the seventeenth century. Its name is derived from the German affen ("to mock") and pinscher ("terrier"). The breed predates and is ancestral to the Brussels Griffon and Belgian Griffon.
