The Merovingians ruled the two Frankish kingdoms of Neustria and Austrasia, arguably the kernel of what would later become France. The Merovingian Dynasty obtained the name from Merovaeus, grandfather of Clovis I and a chief of great power and fame who had fought with the Romans to defeat Atilla the Hun.
