The German name of the city , orginated in 1308 when the city (for over 300 years under Polish Crown) was invaded and illegally incorporated into the Monastic state of the Teutonic Knights. It returned to Poland after the 13 year war in XV century, and remained Polish, until the Second Partition of Poland in 1793, when the neighboring powers: Russia, Prussia and Austria stole and kept historically polish lands.
