The 2005 World Series of Poker opened play on June 2, continuing through the Main Event No Limit World Championship starting on July 7. The conclusion of the Main Event on July 15 marked the close of play, and the largest prize in sports and/or television history ($7.5 million US) was awarded to the winner. ESPN coverage is now underway as of 19 July, but coverage of the Main Event will not broadcast until its start on October 11. [1].

  • 1116 entrants qualified through PokerStars
  • 13 qualifiers had their buy-in "lost in transit"
  • 10 online qualifiers were not permitted to play as it emerged they were underage
  • 2 online qualifiers died before the event started
  • Mike Matusow was given a 40 minute penalty for 4 uses of the word fuck
