This is a list of comic strips. See also cartoonist, webcomic, and list of web comics for additional information.

The dates shown after a name relate to the period during which the comic appeared. There is usually a fair degree of accuracy about the starting date, but because of rights being transferred or the very gradual loss of appeal of a particular strip the termination date is often very uncertain. The names shown refer to the originators of the character; many have continued to be created by others over time. It is also to be noted that many of the characters appeared in both strip and book format as well as in other media. Good sources for further information: Don Markstein's Toonopedia, Bhob Stewart's Fusebox Vintage Newspaper Comic Strips, Ohio State University's Cartoon Research Library, and Lambiek Comiclopedia.

The symbol Reuben after a name identifies winners of the Outstanding Cartoonist of the Year Reuben Award but it should be remembered that many of the very greatest strip artists worked in the years before the first Reuben Award was given out.

Webcomics, comic strips that exist only on the World Wide Web and are not created primarily for newspapers or magazines, are designated with the tag web comic. Primary sites for web comics are ModernTales, Serializer, and KeenSpace. See also list of web comics.
