Quick question
Seems like an eclectic choice of articles that you've developed. Just wondering how you come to choose them, is it that you're related or something? Kind regards, jguk 23:40, 30 Jan 2005 (UTC)
Gangs of New York
Thanks for working on the Category:Gangs of New York. I'd been meaning to get to it myself. Great topic. Cheers, -Willmcw 07:55, 2 Feb 2005 (UTC)
Proposed deletion
Another editor listed List of General Slocum victims on Wikipedia:Votes for deletion. Even if you disagree with a proposed deletion, you should not remove the tag. In close cases, this kind of behavior sometimes influences people to vote in favor of deletion. Just vote to keep the article. Even more constructive is to understand why people want to delete it and try to answer their objections, as I've done by adding the context of the list. JamesMLane 16:03, 15 Feb 2005 (UTC)
At some point an admin will canvass the votes and decide whether there's a consensus. People highlight their votes because the admin generally doesn't read all the comments, but only enough to do the tally. I assume your vote is in favor of keeping; given the way you've set it up, though, an admin going through in haste may well count it as delete. JamesMLane 04:15, 16 Feb 2005 (UTC)
Oppenheimer census card
That's a really great addition. Where did you get it from? I've never seen or heard of that before in the Oppenheimer literature. --Fastfission 22:56, 16 Feb 2005 (UTC)
- That's really pretty great. Could you upload the 1930 one as well? I think those are really great resources, especially when applied to a question like this. A birth certificate would be pretty amazing as well. Most of the discussion of his initial has been done just from interviews, not documents, so this is fairly neat from a historian's point of view. I often use the ProQuest subscription I get through my university to look up details in old NYTimes and Washington Post articles (which often contain some interesting information, especially in obituaries, causes of death, last words, etc.), but I hadn't really thought about documents like this before. --Fastfission 02:50, 17 Feb 2005 (UTC)
- If you guarantee that your plans are not nefarious, I would happily send you whatever article you are interested in from the NYT, Washington Post, or Wall Street Journal (the three I have access to). You can use the "E-mail this user" on my user page to contact me. --Fastfission 05:35, 17 Feb 2005 (UTC)
Image tagging
I'm asssuming that the image that you uploaded: Image:7691994108595984398.jpg was placed by you in the public domain? I'll add the relevent tag, but if that isn't a copyright that you place on that image, please feel free to change it to any other license from Wikipedia:Image_copyright_tags. - Estel (talk) 13:00, Feb 17, 2005 (UTC)

Buster Keaton
Looks like we're both working on the Keaton page. I've been editing it on and off for a few weeks, as information became available. Originally, it sounded more like a breathless fan-page than an encyclopedia entry. I don't really think that, up to this point, I've been "bold"; I'm just re-arranging and adding facts here and there.
I'd like to add information on Keaton's significance and contribution to film history and technique. I'm wondering if you can contribute to that kind of effort as well.
(BTW, 'patent medicine' is much better than 'snake-oil'. Thanks.)

Image:25378254536.jpg
Hi! Thanks for uploading Image:25378254536.jpg. I notice it currently doesn't have an image copyright tag. Could you add one to let us know its copyright status? (You can use {{gfdl}} if you release it under the GFDL, or {{fairuse}} if you claim fair use, etc.) If you don't know what any of this means, just let me know where you got the image and I'll tag it for you. Thanks so much, – Quadell (talk) (sleuth) 21:56, Feb 26, 2005 (UTC)
Images and alignment
Looking at the page, it might just be a problem of too many images placed too close to one another, and the browser is trying its hardest to sort them out correctly. You can try playing with the |left| and |right| additions to the image tag, but beyond that my recommendation would be to try and space them out a bit more in the text. Alternatively there are ways to set things with div tags (see Wikipedia:Image markup with HTML) but I'm not 100% sure that will work. Also, if you sign your posts to talk pages with four tildes (~~~~), it will put your user name at the bottom of what you wrote, along with the time/date stamp, and makes it much easier to see who is posting to the page (and makes it easier to get back to you). Glad you liked the Post article! Let me know if anything else comes up that you need. --Fastfission 22:53, 3 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Hunter S. Thompson picture
Nice picture of Hunter S. Thompson at Image:10504755110907657454.jpg. I notice it is tagged public domain. Did you take this picture? If so, please note this—this is as simple as changing the tag to {{PD-self}}. If not, then please cite the source of this image, providing evidence if possible that the image is public domain (note that any image of Hunter produced in his lifetime would fall under copyright unless the holder explicitly released it into the public domain).
Thanks. Also you should do the same for some of the other images you have uploaded. It may be a bit of a hassle but this documentation is important to the project. And one final note, you should rename or copy images to something more discriptive than a long number before uploading. Otherwise you should use the "Move" button to rename the images after uploading, and then change the links in articles. This makes images easier to browse and search for. NTK 00:51, 16 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Images on Nancy Hopkins article
Hi some of the images here are tagged as public domain, I believe they aren't as they are post 1923. Others are untagged. So I'm going to tag some as fair use and schdule others for deletion through WP:PUI If you can help by indicating source we can save some of these. Thanks — Zeimusu | Talk 14:04, 17 Mar 2005 (UTC)
General Slocum list
You better watch out on Wikisource. My Wikisource:List of victims of the 1913 Great Lakes storm is up for deletion. They're telling me to move it to Wikipedia.... This is idiotic. Wikipedians say it belongs on Wikisource, and people on Wikisource say it belongs on Wikipedia. --brian0918™ 16:44, 2 Apr 2005 (UTC)

May the space to the right remain long unfilled
Mr. Norton, I am glad to see the righthand emptiness in the "(1958- )" tag which accompanies your sig. May it long be so. Nice map additions to the Five Points article (which I mostly wrote). Hoboken, New Jersey is also mostly mine. Maybe soon I can mention some of your individual bio material for people born in Hoboken. Long live New Jerseyans (I see you're in Somerset, I'm in Hoboken). People love to make a joke of NJ, but this state has nurtured loyal and inventive citizens out of all proportion. For every bedrock New Jerseyan like Thomas Edison and John A. Roebling there've been fistfuls of New York shysters like Jay Gould and Donald Trump. Folks like you and me might address this in WikiP in future. JDG 21:26, 6 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Image copyright
Thank you for uploading Image:Buck 8638926110759397307.jpg and for stating the source. However, its copyright status is unclear, so it may have to be deleted. If it is open content or public domain, please give proof of this on the image page. If the image is fair use, please provide a rationale. Thank you. --Ellmist 20:34, 10 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Hi Richard, I saw that you placed a speedy delete notice on this image of Adella Wotherspoon, which is being used on the page about her, but without giving a reason. Is there a copyright problem? SlimVirgin (talk) 00:14, Apr 30, 2005 (UTC)

Hi, the current article on pectin seems a bit hard to read and looks like it was swiped from a larger work. As you work in chemistry and seem to know what pectin is, can you help with this article? Thanx 68.39.174.150 03:05, 5 May 2005 (UTC)
Hi, Richard, you uploaded this image and tagged it as PD, but also noted Collection of Ralph Freudenberg (1903-1980) as its source.
It has been listed on Wikipedia:Copyright problems and will be deleted soon unless you can explain why it is PD. Thanks, --Duk 19:08, 13 May 2005 (UTC)
- First of all, I didn't list this image on Wikipedia:Copyright problems, someone else did, I'm just the administrator clearing the listing.
- Are you the copyright holder? Did you inherit or buy the rights? And are you now releasing to PD? Otherwise, if Ralph Freudenberg is the copyright holder, then this image doesn't enter public domain until 2050 (seventy years after death, I believe.) Thanks for your patience.--Duk 23:14, 13 May 2005 (UTC)
- OK, I did some more homework; the initial edit of this image page (by you) contained the text {{copyright}}, leading to this notice. That's why it got listed on Wikipedia:Copyright problems.
- Later, you removed the copyright tag and added the PD release tag. So, just to make sure that I understand, you are the copyright holder and are releasing to PD?--Duk 23:37, 13 May 2005 (UTC)

Somehow I am scheptical that you took that photograph in 1943, given your apparent birthdate in your user name. -- Infrogmation 16:49, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Please review the copyright statement on their webpage and share with me your opinion. --Chiacomo (talk) 3 July 2005 05:35 (UTC)
Axel Enström on Votes for Deletion
Hi! I want to inform you that the Axel Enström article has been nominated for deletion at Wikipedia:Votes for deletion/Axel Enström. Since the Swedes on Wikipedia have come to save it, I don't think there's a risk it will actually be deleted. I think it is great that you are making well-researched contributions to Wikipedia. However, if I may offer some humble advice, I think there might be a couple of things you could do in order to avoid getting your hard work considered for deletion in the future.
- First, try to provide some context for the person you're writing about. Although you might have planned to do it later, it is generally a good idea to do it in the first draft. Also, try to find Wikipedia articles about the places, companies and organizations you mention and link to them. In this case, the Swedish multinational industrial corporation SCA was mistaken for a "small belgian company" by the nominator. (I've added a link now.) With some context, it is easier to determine whether a person is notable or not. And as you might have noticed, for an article about a person to be allowed to stay here, its subject has to be reasonably notable. Editors generally use the What Wikipedia is not policy to judge articles, and understanding these rules will help you include the facts needed to make others see the relevance of the entry.
- Also, try to avoid burdening your articles with facts that are not really relevant in this context. Focus on the major achievements and notable traits of the person you're writing about. While a street adress (mentioned twice in the Enström article) might be of interest in a genealogic database, it isn't really fitting for an encyclopedia article. Although this in itself is not in any way grounds for deletion, it will often convey the impression of "filler" material to other editors. So-called "vanity articles", generally written by teenagers about themselves, often contain this kind of information, simply because there are no notable achievements to mention. To an editor taking a quick look at a new article, the inclusion of more or less trivial facts can lead to the conclusion that the subject of your article is altogether trivial.
- Thirdly, try to write your articles in a coherent prose, using full sentences and a logical general structure. The Guide to writing better articles offers useful advice. If the text is well written and easy to follow, other editors can easier judge the importance of the subject. Of course, anyone is welcome to contribute to Wikipedia, and there is no requirement for content to be perfectly formatted in order to stay. Also, no one is expected to master all the specifics rules and guidelines around here. (Myself, I've given up a long time ago.) But the better your contributions look, the more favourably they will probably be looked upon.
In the Axel Enström article, I would also strongly suggest that you avoid using as many headers as you've done. As it is, some of the sections contain only one sentence. This makes the text look cut up. If you've planned on expanding the article later, that's fine, but then it might be a good idea to leave a note on the article's Talk page to that effect.
In conclusion: I hope that you're not let down by the fact that someone listed your article on Votes for Deletion. However, I think there are some useful things that can be learnt from the process. I hope you find my points above useful and I look forward to see more interesting contributions from you. Happy editing! / Alarm 17:17, 25 July 2005 (UTC)
Please add your source for this photo. Thuresson 01:56, 23 August 2005 (UTC)
While I'm not sure the page is notable enough to save in and of itself, I believe it's interesting enough information to pass around. Try making the site famous by alternative means (such as, say, original research on Wikicities somewhere, as original research isn't allowed on Wikipedia), or put the site on your user page, or provide more documented information about Mary Ellis...I have, however, added a short description of the grave under New Brunswick, New Jersey, as well as your picture of said grave. What exactly did Frelinghuysen do that is notable? What is the P. Ballantine & Sons Company? If being President of that company is notable, would not that company be therefore than much more notable, and therefore deserve an article? I was just about to publish a pathetic little stub article about this person, when I decided that I had better do a proper search, just to make sure that it did not already exist, when, hey presto, I discovered your draft. Why have you not published it (or all the others). It is brilliant!--Mais oui! 12:29, 5 November 2005 (UTC)
- Thank you for your reply on my User page. Why was the article deleted? I can see no fundamental flaws with it. Is it OK if I re-initiate the article, as I think that he is a notable person, and part of a series of articles I had planned on Scottish-Swedes. His legend continues to live on in at least one part of old MacLean country: Ardgour.--Mais oui! 18:09, 5 November 2005 (UTC)

Doesn't look like you ever finished your nomination, or else you did a typo, because the WP:RFA page is just having a redlink for you. Probably ought to check that. The Literate Engineer 02:38, 23 December 2005 (UTC)
No problem. I remember I had all sorts of trouble getting things right back when I nominated Splash. Anyway, I went in and set up the page for you, Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ) with the template:rfa. You just have to change the description from "Self-nomination." to whatever you want it to be, and answer the questions and all that. Good luck to you! I think you should merge forged evidence into the pre-existing falsification of evidence article, which covers different reports of the same problem. Cheers! BDAbramson T 04:12, 28 December 2005 (UTC)
- Happens to me all the time - sometimes I'll spend hours on an article, and then happen upon a bigger, better version of the same thing. That's why I always make as many possible redirects to my articles as I can think of! BDAbramson T 04:19, 28 December 2005 (UTC)
- Changed the article to Falsified evidence - a cop dropping a gun at the scene of a shooting would not constitute a forgery, for example. BDAbramson T 05:14, 28 December 2005 (UTC)

Frelinghuysen
George Griswold Frelinghuysen (May 9, 1851 - 1936) was a 19th Century American patent lawyer, and President of P. Ballantine & Sons Company, a New Jersey brewery.
He was the son of Frederick Theodore Frelinghuysen and Matilda Elizabeth Griswold. He graduated from Rutgers College in 1870, received his Bachelor of Laws from Columbia University Law School in 1872, and was admitted to the New Jersey and New York bars in 1872 and 1876 respectively. He became a patent lawyer, eventually working for and becoming President of Ballantine. At its peak, Ballantine was the fourth largest brewery in the United States.
George married Sara Linen Ballantine on April 26, 1881. Sara was the granddaughter of Peter Ballantine, the New Jersey brewer. George and Sara had two children together: Peter Hood Ballantine Frelinghuysen I (1882-?) who married Adaline Havemeyer (1884-?); and Matilda Elizabeth Frelinghuysen (1887-?). George died in 1936.
The George Griswold Frelinghuysen Arboretum is named for him.
Category:Ailments of unknown etiology
Please be very selective in including articles in Category:Ailments of unknown etiology. This is a bag of very diverse conditions, some of which are actually very well understood and are simply waiting to be linked to some risk factors. I removed "Sjogren syndrome" and suggest you discuss these changes first. I also think the category is very oddly named. "Ailments" is archaic and POV. JFW | T@lk 07:19, 1 January 2006 (UTC)
- The molecular basis for many diseases is not yet known, but that does not make them "ailments of unknown etiology"; the category would become so huge it would be pointless. Tell us the exact molecular basis for Alzheimer's disease and you'll be a rich man. The ICD-10 is a potentially useful guideline in populating that category.
- I'm not sure what you're alluding to with the genealogy comment; I'm not working on any such project. Also: I never attend Drug Rep dinners - they don't cater for my dietary requirements (and that's despite allegations from some users that I'm a big pharma sockpuppet, but never mind). JFW | T@lk 09:00, 1 January 2006 (UTC)
My point was the opposite: there are so many completely unrelated diseases that would fit your broad definition of "unknown etiology" the category would cease you be useful. I am not passing any verdicts on the pseudoscientific background of some specific entitities (such as multiple chemical sensitivitiy). JFW | T@lk 09:21, 1 January 2006 (UTC)

You're welcome! I found it while doing cleanup in U.S. politician categories and was working on the United States Senators from New Jersey category. I found Smith in the category but not the list of senators, so I looked up the information. Image Tagging Image:Drexel-Katherine1.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:Drexel-Katherine1.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the image, so the copyright status is therefore unclear. If you have not created the image yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the image on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the image yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.
If the image also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture then you can use {{GFDL}} to release it under the GFDL. If you can claim fair use use {{fairusein|article name}} or {{fairuse}}. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
If you have uploaded other images, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of image pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. --Sherool (talk) 02:11, 7 January 2006 (UTC)
