Swampert (ラグラージ Laglarge in Japanese, Sumpex in German and Laggron in French) is a fictional character of the Pokémon franchise.
This Pokémon's name comes from swamp, a place where many Water and Ground-type Pokémon would likely be found, and rampart, meaning a fortification, which probably refers to its habit of piling up boulders to protect itself (see "Biology" below).
Appearance
Swampert's appearance is inspired from the real world mudskipper. It has a long blue body with a lighter blue underbelly. It has four appendages that are a cross between legs and fins. Each has an orange oval on it. Swampert has large, fan-shaped fins above its eyes and in place of a tail. It also has a pair of orange gills on either side of its face.
Biology
Swampert makes its nest by the seaside, preferring a beautiful beach best. It is amphibious, adapted well for a life both in and out of water. It can swim in speeds approaching that of a jet ski, and its eyes allow it perfect visibility underwater, even if said water is muddy and murky.
Swampert can sense when the weather changes to the worse, as it is attuned to the sound of waves and the tidal winds. Its fins pick up the subtle differences that are a prelude to a storm. Once certain a storm is approaching, Swampert defends its nest by barricading it with large boulders. Its great strength allows to procure and drag rocks weighing more than a ton.
In the video games
Swampert can be obtained only by evolving a Marshtomp, which, in turn, must be evolved from Mudkip, a starter Pokémon in Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald.
Swampert has great attack and defenses, but its special attack is not very good for a Stage 2 Pokémon, and its speed is decidedly low. Its Water/Ground type combination protects it from Electric-type Pokémon, which are usually a pain against Water-type Pokémon, but it also makes it quadruply weak to Grass-type attacks. It can learn Ice Beam, which may help to counter this vulnerability.
Swampert is usually used in physical offense, with the powerful Ground-type Earthquake attack a staple in almost all of its movesets. Swampert's excellent defenses also make it a good choice for a pseudo-hazing with roar.
In the animé
Swampert first appears in episode #308 (Abandon ship!), in which it belonged to a trainer named Tommy, who had lost it as a Marshtomp inside an old, abandoned ship.
Masamume, one of Ash's opponents in the Hoenn Pokémon League, also used a Swampert in his match against him.
In the Trading Card Game
Swampert's card appearances were in the following sets:
- EX: Ruby and Sapphire (as two Water-type cards)
- EX: Team Magma vs. Team Aqua (as a ground-type Swampert EX)
- EX Emerald (as a water-type card)
