Krakatoa (Indonesian name: Krakatau).

Volcano on the Indonesian island of Rakata in the Sunda Strait that suffered a massive eruption on August 26, 1883 at 10.02 am local time. It was the most severe volcanic explosion on Earth in modern times (VEI of 6, equivalent to 200 MT of TNT) more than 35,000 people were killed by the resultant tsunami waves.

Since the 1883 eruption which destroyed the old volcano, a new island volcano, called Anak Krakatau, has formed in the caldera. Of considerable interest to volcanologists, this has been the subject of extensive study since 1960.
