Maine is a state of the United States. To the east is the Atlantic Ocean, and to the north is New Brunswick, a province of Canada. Maine is the northernmost state in the New England region.
At the time of the American Revolution, Maine was part of Massachusetts. It became the 23rd state under the Missouri Compromise of 1820. Maine's original capitol was Portland until 1832, when it was moved to the more geographically central city of Augusta.
Maine has a long tradition of personal self-reliance, and Yankee ingenuity.
