Trivia
Template:Spoiler There are numerous references throughout Gundam Seed and Seed Destiny to previous Gundam series and other works by director Mitsuo Fukuda, as his wife Chiaka Morosawa is often the scriptwriter or story editor for his productions. Most notable among the non-Gundam references are those to Fukuda's GPX Cyber Formula television and OVA series. Among these are the convertible that Athrun drives in Episode 8, which is a civilian-use version of the Asurada, protagonist Hayato Kazami's racing machine from Cyber Formula. Other references include the house in Orb that Kira & friends live at, which look exactly the same as Hayato's New Jersey residence in Cyber Formula Sin; the motorcycle that Shinn rides in Ep 21, which is the same motorcycle that Hayato rides on in the beginning of the Cyber Formula TV series; the part of the third OP where Lacus turns her head to look at Kira, which is reminiscent of a scene from the Cyber Formula Saga OP; and the scene in the fourth OP with Gilbert and Talia is almost an exact duplicate of a scene with Kyoshiro Nagumo and Kyoko Aoi in the Cyber Formula Sin OP.
In particular there is a strong resemblance between the Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam series in Universal Century and Gundam SEED Destiny in many aspects. This is especially apparent in the mobile suit designs (for example the similarity between Psyco Gundam and Destroy Gundam, Hyaku Shiki and Akatsuki, etc). Gundam Seed Destiny also recycles several famous vintage Universal Century mobile suits (Zaku, Gouf and Dom), this is the second alternate-universe series (after Turn-A Gundam) which has used its own versions of Universal Century Mobile Suits. In character developments and plots Seed Destiny also follows many details of Zeta Gundam, such as the return of the protagonists from the previous series (Amuro Ray/Kira Yamato), the manipulations of body and mind of the Cyber Newtypes/Extended, and the doomed romantic relationships between the protagonists and female mobile suit pilots of the enemy. One notable dissimilarity is that SEED Destiny lacks the death rate of characters seen in Zeta Gundam. Another major difference is that while both feature the protagonists from the previous series, SEED Destiny often sets the recurring cast members opposing the new characters, while the old and new protagonists in Zeta ended up joining the same side.
Criticisms
Much criticism in the media and fanbase is concentrated at director Mitsuo Fukuda for giving his wife too much creative control with the script, and caving into fan demand to make popular returning Gundam Seed characters (with the notable example of Kira) preeminent in favor of those newly introduced Seed Destiny characters. These changes over the course of the 50-episode series result in rocky and inconsistent characterization. Animation director Yousuke Kabashima also critized Morosawa in his blog, for shifting the storyline on the fly and habitually turning in scripts late, and also implied that she only had her job as chief writer because she was Fukuda's wife (a suggestion echoed by many fans). Morosawa has also recieved heavy criticism from fans for abruptly writing Cagalli, previously an important, popular and strong-willed character out of the story and ending her relationship with Athrun without explanation. This unexplained plot change was conducted without mitigating circumstances and little to no notice by any of the characters. Criticism of this change was exacerbated by a post-series interview in which she gave explanations that many fans felt to be dubious at best. A target of particular scorn is her assertion that Athrun would need to be the leader of his own nation for their romance to resume, even though logically such a situation would make a relationship more difficult (nations inherently have differing agendas, making a romance between their leaders an obvious conflict of interest).
