Goran Ivanišević

Goran Ivanišević (born September 13, 1971) is a Croatian tennis player who had many successful tennis tournament performances, including a victory at Wimbledon Championships in 2001. Ivanišević was born in the port city of Split.

In Barcelona he won the first Olympic medal for his newly independent country of Croatia. His ribbon promoted the checkerboard pattern of the Croatian coat of arms.

Ivanišević temporarily retired in the early 2000s due to injuries, but remained listed at the bottom of the ATP's ranklist. He returned to tennis in 2004, but will retire permanently after the 2004 Wimbledon.

2001 saw Goran win the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Overseas Personality Award.
