Feudal rank was a formalized system of ranks introduced in the middle ages, similar to military rank. The basic ordering was:

  • Emperor, or King, who rules an Empire or Kingdom
  • Arch Duke, rules an Arch Duchy, used only by the Hapsburgs in Austria
  • Grand Duke, ruling a Grand Dutchy
  • Duke, who rules a Dutchy
  • Count, who rules a County
  • Viscount (vice-count) and Baron, ran estates, but this was not an official ranking
