For other countries see Telephone numbering plan.
This is a list of North American telephone area codes in effect for the North American Numbering Plan. Note that an area code cannot start with a 1 or 0 because at the beginning they represent either feature codes or long distance. Prior to 1995 all had 0 or 1 as the middle digit; all new codes use 2 through 8 (9 is reserved in case the area codes need to be expanded to 4 digits - If this occurs, Area Code XXX will become X9XX). Area Codes of the form N11 are reserved for local usage such as the 911 Emergency Number to get Police/Fire/EMS Dispatchers (N11 is not a valid exchange for the same reason).
