Lake Tambukan

Tambukan Lake (Template:Lang-ru) – lake with bitter-salt water on Northern Caucasus in Stavropol Krai (about 33% surface) and Karachay-Cherkessia Republic (about 66% surface) of Russian Federation, at 8 km away from Pyatigorsk. Area is 1.87 square kilometers, deep is from 1.5 to 3.1 meters. At the bottom bedding a big layer of mud silt. This mud use (from 1886) in institution for mud cures in Essentuki and other therapeutic mud-baths in region of Caucasian Mineral Water.

Tambukan Lake

In 1395 Timur take a bath in Tambukan Lake.

Kabardian prince Murzarbek Tambiev in 1709 crushing near this lake Crimean-Turkish army. The word Tambukan come from Turk words Tambu k’an and means Tambiev’s blood or Tambiev’s asylum.

In 1717 Peter The Great send doctor Shober on expedition to medicinal wather and mud search.

First scientific descriprion of Tambukan Lake compose Guldenschtedt in 1773.

On this lake mud cure Feodor Chaliapin, Anton Chekhov, Leo Tolstoy etc.
