Channel 101 is a monthly event in Los Angeles created by Dan Harmon and Rob Schrab (the creators and writers of Heat Vision and Jack) where participants submit a "pilot" under five minutes in length. The "Channel" is based on a concept that could be referred to as "Democractic Programming." According to the Channel 101 website, "Channel 101 is a chance to sit in the worn-out chair of the fat network exec, drunk on the blood of lowly artists whose right to exist is given in exchange for their ability to nourish...You run the network. You pick the programming." [1]

Channel 101 Terminology

  • Chauncey - A director calls a chauncey when his or her pilot is initially rejected by the Prime Time panel but feels it needs to be seen by the audience. The director must give a reason for calling a chauncey and be at both screenings to explain their reasoning to the audience. The term was named after Chris Chauncey, who called the first "Chauncey" for his pilot "The Serious Businessman"

The chauncey was temporarily done away with in favor of an "internet vote" determining whether or not a "rejected pilot" deserved to be shown at the monthly screening. This was a short-lived venture and chaunceys have been reinstated. Most chaunceys have been 'coughed off', as in shut off before the pilot even finished as the audience members deemed it to be too boring or bad to watch. However, the Chauncey was finally abolished
