There has been significant emigration from Co. Cork in particular the western part.

Protestant emigration predominantly from the Church of Ireland community was significant in the early 19 century in particular to Canada and to Rochester in Upper New York. This emigration was fuelled by lack of economic opportunity and the failure of the home textile business.

This was followed by substantial Catholic emigration on the post famine period, building on a previous emigration. The emigrants in this later period were driven by hunger and economic desperation and mainly went to the United States.
