Lists of countries with people on postage stamps

This is an old revision of this page, as edited by Danny (talk | contribs) at 23:43, 21 December 2002 (fixed a link to Nasser. What is the consensus on spelling his name?). The present address (URL) is a permanent link to this revision, which may differ significantly from the current revision.

Although many smaller countries will put a hodge-podge of international personalities on their stamps in an effort to make sales to collectors, countries with a more respectable issuing policy will more often feature people who have played an important role in the country's own history and culture. For a Wikipedian, a list of such people can be a source of inspiration to find more obscure topics to write about.

What follows is a list by country (i.e. by stamp-issuing authority) of identified people on stamps with the year in which that person was first featured on the stamp. The extensive use of catalogue numbers has been avoided because of potential copyright problems. The Scott Publishing Co. in particular has a reputation for diligently protecting its copyrighted numbering system. A more practical reason for shunning catalogue numbers is that each of the four major publishers (Scott, Gibbon, Michel and Yvert) has its own system that is incompatible with all the others. The italic note after the country name is merely to indicate the extent that its stamps have been reviewed.
