New York also has an Interstate 290 north of Buffalo.

New York State Route 290, located entirely within Onondaga County, runs from the city of Syracuse to the east side of the county. It provides access to Green Lakes State Park from the north.

The highway gets its number from the longstanding plans to extend Interstate 690 east from its current eastern terminus at Interstate 481 to Manlius or even Chittenango. Since NY 690 has already been assigned to the segment that continues from the western terminus, a different number would be needed and 290 was chosen as there were no plans to extend the Interstate 290 north of Buffalo.

In the meantime, 290 is one of several state highways linking Syracuse and its eastern suburbs.
