The school has approximately 2,000 students from years 7 to 12, with over 200 staff.

GWSC is an active participant of the international student and exchange programs with over 40 nationalities and more than 50 languages represented within the College.

The revolutionising principal of the school proved to be Tony Bell, who over a decade spanning from the 80s to mid 1999 brought in new facilities that were beyond what most public schools were able to afford. Under Tony Bell, the school was able to unveil its heralded "Science and Technology Centre" which contained some of the best facilities seen in a public school. This introduction allowed a far more comprehensive base for teaching technology, especially in the areas of electronics, materials (wood, metal and plastic), textiles as well as information technology. The building also allowed new science labs. Tony Bell retired mid 1999 to allow Vice Principal, Darrell Fraser to take the job. Tony also had a keen interest in visiting China where he actively promoted the school. As a result, the school proved popular with international students.

Darrell Fraser, in his job as principal between 1999 and 2004 attended Harvard University at one stage due to his recognition as a great leader. In 2004, due to the respect he commanded in his role as an educator and leader, he was offered the position of Deputy Secretary in School Operations in the Department of Education & Training, Victoria.

Gerry Schiller, a man who was the head of middle school only years prior, is the current principal. Despite his short tenure, he saw the old Art and North wing buildings of the school demolished to build a state of the art learning facility, making better use of the limited space available to the school, given the number of students.

On the morning of Monday, October 27th 2003, Dr Ziggy Switkowski, then CEO of Telstra Corporation, visited the College as part of the "Principal for a Day" program.

In late 2004, Glen Waverley Secondary College was involved in a political advertising campaign comparing itself to Scotch College, Melbourne, arguably Australia's most prestigious and profound school, in terms of government funding. The figures in the advertisement were completely wrong on Scotch College's behalf which saw a court case won against the political party who published the advertisement on national TV. Allegations that Glen Waverley Secondary College was involved in the making of the ad have not been confirmed.
