During World War II, Selbstopfer (German for auto-sacrifice), was a German Nazi project initiated by Hanna Reitsch to create suicide-pilots (like Japanese Kamikaze), flying Fieseler Fi 103 R Reichenberg, a manned version of the V1 Flying Bomb.

Death was not an absolute certitude; in theory the pilot could bale out just before impact. However, given the speed of the impact and the position of the pulsejet inlet, the chance of pilot survival was nearly equal to zero.

Some other Nazi secret weapons projects involved near-suicide missions like the Bachem Ba 349 Natter.
