Each week a Collaboration of the Week will be picked using this page. This is a specific topic which either has no article or a basic stub page, the aim being to have a featured-standard article by the end of the week, from widespread cooperative editing.
The project aims to fill gaps in Wikipedia, to give users a focus and to give us all something to be proud of. Anyone can nominate an article and can vote for the nominated articles. Every Sunday, the votes are tallied, and the winner will be promoted for a week to potential contributors.
Previous winners can be found at /History.
Removed nominations can be found at /Removed.
Selecting the next Collaboration of the Week
The next winner will be selected on Sunday, October 3, 18:00 (UTC).
Voting
Please vote for as many of the following candidates as you like. Please add only support votes. Opposing votes will not affect the result, as the winner is simply the one with the most support votes (see Approval voting).
Only registered users should vote.
To enter your votes, simply edit the appropriate sections by just inserting a new line with "# ~~~~". This will add your username and a time stamp in a new numbered list item.
Tie-breakers
In case of a tie, voting will be extended for 24 hours. If there is still a tie, the candidate that was nominated first wins.
Nominations
New nominations can be made at any time and should be added at the end of this page. Please use the template.
If the page you are nominating already exists, please add {{COTW}} to the top of its talk page. This expands to: Template:COTW
Considerations for nominations
- Please only nominate articles which don't currently exist or are stubs. (Two paragraphs or less of information or fewer than 1,000 characters)
- For non-stubs, submitting the article to pages needing attention, cleanup, peer review, or requests for expansion may be more appropriate.
- Giving reasons as to why an article should become the COTW may assist others in casting their vote.
- Can the wider community easily contribute to the article? Or is it something only a small number of people will know about?
Pruning
For pages nominated on or after 1 September 2004, the nomination will be moved to /Removed if it has not received 5 votes after 7 days on the list, 10 votes after 14 days, 15 votes after 21 days, and so on. Previously, the pruning limit was 4 votes per week, and the old limit will continue to apply to pages nominated before 1 September 2004. Please see the talk page for discussion of this change in pruning policy.
Candidates for next week
- Nominated August 11; needs 40 votes by October 20 (minimum 4 votes per week)

- Displaying my own interests a bit much, perhaps, but I was surprised to see that this was a red link. I may have missed some content, but surely there must be something to be said for warfare in the time of the Greeks, Persians, Madedonians, Romans, Iceni, Germans, Dacians, Parthians, Huns, Vandals. On the negative side, medieval warfare and siege were both quite recent. Renaissance warfare, early modern warfare and aerial warfare are also red, but I though this one was the most glaring omission. -- ALoan (Talk) 12:54, 11 Aug 2004 (UTC)
- Given that films about ancient warfare are back in fashion in the cinema(Troy, Alexander, etc) it should be a topic of some interest. Average Earthman 09:46, 12 Aug 2004 (UTC)
- Oh yes, here's another fun one. Think of all that could be added: the changes in tactics (phalanx, cavalry, first use of strategic reserves) and weapons, and capsule descriptions of battles (Arbela, Cannae, Salamis, Chalons) and their significance. A great time could be had by all. Antandrus 01:45, 31 Aug 2004 (UTC)

- They're not on at the same time, the 2004 paralympics is the 17th to 28th of September. As for not being important, the BBC is showing an hour and a half of coverage per night, so at least one major broadcaster views it as being of some importance. Average Earthman 10:31, 30 Aug 2004 (UTC)

- Erm, today is the 12th, Jiang. The Paralympics start on the 17th, and end on the 28th. This is currently third or fourth in line, which means it's almost definitely going to end a week or two after the Paralympics conclude, which is perfect. If it had been nominated any later, it would've actually got to be COTW so late that it would be practically useless, as they would have been over so long before that all the interest would have passed. Ambi 10:29, 12 Sep 2004 (UTC)
- People are voting on its current status. There is no guarantee or indication that no one will be interested on the article as the Paralympics are held and the article could very well be improved and not need to be the COTW to be
unstubbed(not a stub at the moment and reasonable length for an article on a future event). This would be a waste. I really don't see the logic behind the claim that people will lose interest later on and therefore make this unsuitable for COTW - the point of COTW is to get people's attention. If the article already gets people's attention (like to summer olympics), when why make it the COTW? In this context, my comment really does appear to make a whole lot of sense. --Jiang 11:03, 12 Sep 2004 (UTC)

- Extinction and Extinction event can be merged, with extinction being a primary topic. If there needs to be sub-topics on extinction events, then there should be individual ones for the mass extinctions (which there are), linked back into a combined article. They can also be left separate... it largely depends on how large and detailed people want the main article on extinction to get. If left separate, the article on ELEs should also make note of other important, but not one of the Big Five, extinctions. Baryonyx 00:46, Sep 28, 2004 (UTC)

- "The widest interstate war in modern African history", directly involving "nine African nations", deserves more than 2 paragraphs and a list of section headings.... -- PFHLai 02:40, 2004 Sep 10 (UTC)
- but surely September 11, 2001 attacks, a very long page, is much more important, because the 3000 dead were mainly American, and in Congo's case it was only 3 million Africans? (posted by User:Xed)
- Certainly more widely known, and in terms of direct effect on policies taken and money spent, you could make a case for it... (ducks). Seriously, support. [[User:Meelar|Meelar (talk)]] 21:49, Sep 10, 2004 (UTC)
- This probably has something to do with the fact that there are more English-speaking Wikipedians in the U.S. than in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (an article which, incidentally, has some information that could be in this one). But this kind of comment is part of why I would be wary of touching such a potentially-sensitive article—I'm not sure that people who feel strongly about this would approve of my well-intentioned but amateurish meddling! --[[User:Aranel|Aranel ("Sarah")]] 21:53, 12 Sep 2004 (UTC)
- We seem to have some fairly good coverage on the Darfur conflict in Sudan (which is next to Congo), despite an expected lack of English-typing Wikipedians. I hope Congo Civil War will get something similar, or better if chosen as COTW. -- PFHLai 22:18, 2004 Sep 12 (UTC)
- Good point. The question is why the Western media gave far more coverage to the Darfur conflict than the Congo civil war, even though the death toll in Congo is several orders of magnitutde higher. Could it be because of certain resources our economy needs? - pir 16:30, 16 Sep 2004 (UTC)

- Shouldn't the title be Congolese Civil War, like American Civil War, English Civil War ? Deus Ex 17:45, 14 Sep 2004 (UTC)
- The brevity of this article is a damning indictment of Wikipedia, just as the abysmal lack of coverage of the war in the West is a damning indictment of our media. And yet, when I tried to begin expansion of the article I found myself unsure of the basics and entirely ignorant of the details. A damning indictment of me then. Personally I plan to do a lot of reading about this conflict with a view to helping to plug this terrible gap in our coverage, but such a massive topic as this deserves the attention not just of a few interested contributors but of the whole community, and I urge everyone to support its nomination. — Trilobite (Talk) 19:23, 15 Sep 2004 (UTC)
- Unfortunately, Wikipedia at present does not have a mechanism for highlighting articles which lack depth due to Wikipedia's systemic bias. Perhaps it's time there was --Xed 17:05, 21 Sep 2004 (UTC)
- Definitely an article is needed, but what title(s) should be used to distinguish the present conflict from the (arguably more significant) civil war of 1960-1965? Shimmin 18:15, Sep 21, 2004 (UTC)
- I would suggest changing the title of this article to simply Congo War since it was not in all aspects a civil war. --Xed 19:18, 21 Sep 2004 (UTC)
- Wouldn't Great Lakes conflict be a better name for this? It's commonly used to refer to the conflict, because it's become broader than a civil war. Ambi 23:23, 25 Sep 2004 (UTC)

- Just look at "what links here" on the Eye page and you'll see (no pun intended) why we need to expand this one. I think a good compromise would be that we nominate Eye and have a subsection on the human eye directing people to the (non-existant) main article "Human eye". - This timeline of votes in the UN General Assembly shows pretty clearly what other nations think of the embargo. You might think from the voting that Israel supports it, but this report by the Cato Institute says that Israel is one of the embargo's most active subverters. - I disagree. The embargo is perpetrated by the US. To call it a Cuban embargo IMO expresses a US-centric view. I doubt that it would occur to a Cuban to call it a Cuban embargo. While the shorter expression "Cuban embargo" is of course often used as a shorthand, especially inside the US, the above Google statistics are misleading (no criticism intended -- thanks for producing them!). Compare:
- "US embargo" Cuba: 30,400 hits
- "US trade embargo" Cuba: 7,200 hits
- "US economic embargo" Cuba: 3,320 hits
- "US economic sanctions" Cuba: 2,850 hits
- Of course we should redirect "Cuban embargo" to the page, but IMO using this as a title would be POV. Fpahl 21:05, 28 Sep 2004 (UTC)

While the shorter expression "Cuban embargo" is of course often used as a shorthand, especially inside the US, the above Google statistics are misleading (no criticism intended -- thanks for producing them!). Compare:
- Support that as a title. Do any other nations have an embargo of Cuba? If so, the article could also deal with them. Warofdreams 14:06, 27 Sep 2004 (UTC)

- There's a small article under Helms-Burton Act that we could use. The articles on Cuba and Fidel Castro refer to the embargo only in passing. Fpahl 09:53, 22 Sep 2004 (UTC)
- Should U.S. embargo against Cuba be a redirect to Helms-Burton Act with that article expanded? Filiocht 09:32, 24 Sep 2004 (UTC)
- no. The Helms-Burton Act became law in 1996, while the US embargo dates back to the 1960s. Gentgeen 10:48, 24 Sep 2004 (UTC)

- Just a list of topics for a major field of study. There really ought to be an article here, on what art history is and how it's studied. Let's fill this gap in Wikipedia's humanities coverage. Isomorphic 23:24, 22 Sep 2004 (UTC)

- The article doesn't even mention the art and science of making a French omelette!!! There will be more than enough to put in the article, especially depending on how loosely we want to define "omelette", as there are many omelette-like egg dishes around the world. func(talk) 03:10, 29 Sep 2004 (UTC)

- First mentioned it for expansion as it's only about firefighting rescues right now, but I think it's a good cotw candidate. There's a seperate, very US-centric article about Mountain rescue (which perhaps could be merged into rescue) but there isn't any information about sea rescues or other related topics. violet/riga (t) 11:20, 26 Sep 2004 (UTC)
- Additionally: This could be a disambig page and the cotw could be sea rescue, mountain rescue etc. violet/riga (t) 11:26, 26 Sep 2004 (UTC)
- Since the topics are so different, I keep feeling this should be a disambig page, not an article page. Davodd 19:42, Sep 26, 2004 (UTC)
- Perhaps so, and in which case the child articles would be the collaboration. violet/riga (t) 21:15, 26 Sep 2004 (UTC)

- The most common form of war in modern times gets one paragraph and a list. There's a lot to be said about the development of the concept of civil war over the centuries. Also, the effect civil warfare tend to have on a country and its population, economically as well as socially, should certainly be covered.

- The soap opera aired for twelve years and the current incarnation of this article has three sentences: one with the start and end dates, one with the creators' names, and the last one with a VERY BRIEF plot synopsis (i.e. who the main family was). When we have in-depth articles on All My Children and Another World (TV series), we need SOMETHING more on Loving.
