History

The airline was established and started operations on December 1 1991, shortly after Estonian independence. It was founded by the Estonian government from the remnants of the local Aeroflot Division. In 1995, Estonian leased two Boeing 737s to replaces its old Russian planes, and in 1996, after acquiring two more Fokker 50s, it was able to retire the Russian fleet entirely. It was partially privatized in 1996 and is owned by Scandinavian Airlines System (SAS) (49%), Estonian government (34%) and Cresco (17%). It has 302 employees (as of January 2005).
